 Includes NotesNotes for Benedictus Alvord:
The origin of the name is one who came from Alford (the older ford, or the ford of Ealdgyth), villages in Lincolnshire and Somerset.
Benedictus Alvord was born in England about 1615. He removed to Dorchester, MA about 1635. He was a sergeant in the Pequot Fight in 1637, was a juror in April 1643.
He was married November 24, 1640 to Jane Newton, betrothal sermon preached by Rev. Warham on November 17, 1640, from the text, Eph. V1 2, "Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." The teacher improved the theme 'for teaching the betrothed lovers that marriage is a warfaring condition' and 'for reproof to those who think nothing is needed for marriage but the consent of the parents.' In the face of these solemn admonitions, it appears from the Windsor records that they were married before the expiration of the year.
Old church records state that Benedict Alvord's three children died in 1648. He joined the church in Windsor while Warham was there 17 Oct 1641, he belonged to the church of Samuel Mather.
Steele's History of Windsor contains the following reference to the victory over the Pequot Indians, in the fight in which Benedictus Alvord participated:
"A day of special thanksgiving was proclaimed throughout the Colonies, and everywhere the song of exultant victory was blended with prayer and praise to Him that ruleth on High. In all these rejoicings we may well believe that the good people of Windsor had their full share. Capt. Mason, the very foremost man among them was their townsman. So was brave Sergeant Alvord. So were Thomas Barber and Edward Pattison, whose valiant right arm caused seven indians 'to bite the dust'.
He was constable in 1666. He died 23 April 1683, will proved 1683, estate 229 pounds, 3 shilling 9d. Contributor to the fund for "the poor in want in other colonies" made in CT June 1676.

Will dated 30 March 1683. "I Benedictus Alvard of Windsor do make this my last Will & Testament: After my Just Debts are payd, my wife during her Widowhood shall have the Proffitt, Use & Benefit of my Estate for her Comfortable Livelyhood; but if she marryes, to have 30 pounds of what Estate she shall see Cause to take, to be her own free Dispose.
