Stephen Arnold (son of William Arnold and Christian Peake) was born 22 December 1622 in Ilchester, England154, and died 15 November 1699 in Pawtuxet, Providence Co, RI. He married Sarah Smith on 24 November 1646 in Rehobeth, MA155, 156, 157, 158, daughter of Edward Smith.

Stephen Arnold, born in Ilchester, England, emigrated with his father, married in 1646, Sarah Smith, daughter of Edward Smith of Rehobeth, MA.
Stephen was Deputy Governor of the Colony of RI in 1664, 65, 67, 70, 71, 72, 74, 76, 77, 84, 85, 90; "Assistant" in 1672, 77, 78, 89, 90, 91, 96, 98.
He had in Pawtuxet and other places in Rhode Island, large landed property, a portion of which, called the Cowesett Purchase, he divided among his sons in his lifetime. In 1682 he was one of the Inman proprietors of land spoken of in abcient deeds as the "thousand acre purchase."
The purchasers of Warwick met December 10, 1677, and chose Capt. Randall Holden and Capt. John Greene to mamanage their appeal to England and gave them power to mortgage 1500 acres of land on the north side of the plantation of Cowesett beginning at the seaside at Apponaug, to Stephen Arnold, son of William of Pawtuxet for 100 pounds in silver money. This money was used to send a commissioner to urge the King to refuse to grant to Roger Williams the Charter for the Rhode Isalnd Colonies, which he desired.
Stephen had a garrison house at Providence where his father took refuge when forced to leave his home during the Indian War.

His will, dated 2 June, 1698 was proved 12 December 1699, after his death 15 November 1699.
He gave his lands to his three sons in an extremely long will, his estate inventoried at 495 pounds, 11 shillings, 01 pence. It included wearing apparrill, silver, gold, Home-made cloath, bookes, plate, pewter, glasses, a case of bottles, an old truckell bedd, bedding, 2 old coverlidds, a cubboard, small table, 2 joynt stools, 2 chests, a small box, 3 chairs, wool yarn, basketts, and 7 pr. sheets found in the chamber in the southwest end of the house and clossett. In addition, 100 sheepe, foure oxen, twenty-two cows, five two yeare old cattell.
, one three year old heifer, seven yeare old cattell, eight calves, hay, two stocks of Bees, corne, pewter in the lower roome, paire of stilliards, brass, iron, all old and much worne, a spitt and Jack, a scone, grater, 2 earthen plates, a bell mettall morter, a case of knives, working tooles, and tanned leather. A feather bed and bedding in the Porch chamber, a feather bed and bedding in the North chamber, tallow, money due by bills, and a small piece of blanketing. Ref:

1658, Aug 6 he gave notice of receiving two ankers of strong liquor. (He received 17 ankers of liquor from 1660-1664)
1663, Oct 27 At Quarter Court Sessions it was ordered that he should have notice to take the barrel of pork which he left at William Field's towards the last rate, again into his custody, if not being merchantable when he brought it in. The other provisions that people had brought in toward the last rate were also ordered to be searched to see what condition they were in.
1678 He delivered six or eight sheep to the forces sometime lodged at Pawtuxet, was paid 50 shillings to be paid by the several New England colonies in proportion.
1681 he bought 750 acres of Randall Holden, among other purchases,
Both Stephen and his wife were buried at Pawtuxet, the stones marking their graves were moved to Swan Point Cemetery, in Providence, inscription still legible years later.
