From the history and records of Windham, CT, one Joshua Allen died at Windham 27 Dec 1699 (Windham VR). His widow was Mary who subsequently married as his second wife, William More. After she died Wm. More married Tamar Simons. It is very likely that this Joshua Allen was the one of that name listed as a resident of Yarmouth in 1679 (History of Cape Cod). It was suggested by the late genealogist Bertha W. Clark in a paper first written in April of 1954 and revised in Jan 1955 that Joshua Allen was one of the five "least" (unnamed) children of George Allen of Sandwich. She found very strong reasons for thinking the eleventh son may have been Joshua Allen who was at Yarmouth on the cape until 1693 when he bought a thousand acres of land at the Ponds in Windham. Her manuscript is at the NEHGS Library in Boston (G-All-4630 and G-All-4630-A).
Savage Vol. I lists Allen, Joshua, Yarmouth, had son John b. 20 Sep 1672 but no more is known of the family.
The names of the children of Joshua and Mary Allen were inscribed on her tombstone. The fact that the given name Yelverton was used by Joshua and Mary Allen and the probability that they both originated in Yarmouth indicate the likelihood of a connection with the Yelverton Crowell family of Yarmouth. Giving additional weight to this argument is the Windham County land record in which Yelverton Gifford calls William More his uncle NEHGR 125:232,233.
