Notes for J
ACQUES LUSSIER:
I got this off the internet on 5 Feb. 1998. From Norbert Lussier's web page:

Our Ancestor Jacques Lussier (L'Huissier) (1646-1713)

Jacques was born in Paris, France in 1646 son of Jacques Lussier and Marguerite Damine. they lived in the parish of Saint Eustache, archdiocese of Paris. Jacques left Paris when he was around 20 to enter into a three year contract with Pierre Boucher who was then governor at Trois-Rivieres, Nouvelle France. Jacques arrived in Quebec in the fall of 1666. Colonists of this era were required to work 3 years before obtaining their citizenship. Pierre Boucher relinquished his post to Rene Gaultier of Varennes toward the end of 1667. Jacques followed his master to Varrenes in 1668 or 1669. ( Varrenes is opposite to eastern end of the island of Montreal on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence river). (Norbert has spelled this Varrenes?)
Our ancestor first appeared in the official records on September 22, 1669, when he appeared before the notary Becquet to enter into a marriage contract with Charlotte de LaMarche who was a "Fille de Roi" and brought with her a dowry of 300 livres plus 50 livres from the King of France. Charlotte died soon after the birth of their daughter Marie Jeanne (b. February 3, 1670/71). Charlotte's death was the first one recorded in Boucherville, Quebec.
After six months of grieving, Jacques traveled back to Quebec from Varennes in order to find another companion. In Quebec, he met a young 18 year old, Catherine Clerice. Catherine was also a "Fille de Roi" and had a dowry of more than 200 livres plus 50 livres from the King. Romain Becquet registered their marriage contract on October 4, 1671 in the church of Notre Dame, Quebec. The newlyweds then traveled up the St. Lawrence to Varennes where they made their home. Together they raised 12 children plus one from Jacques' first marriage. Jacques drowned in the St. Lawrence river in the late fall of 1712 and his body was found in the spring of 1713. He was buried June 12, 1713 in Sorel, Quebec. Over his lifetime, he had amassed a considered fortune for the early 1700's, some 3000 livres."
I guess I forgot to mention that Jacques was a colonist/farmer.

The above is an extract from "Nos Ancetres Vol 11" by Gerard Lebel, C. Sr.R. ISBN-2-89238-084-7

Also from this web site:

The variation Lussier/Lucier seems to have originated in church marriage records and was dependant on how the clergy recorded it. Remember at this time people at this time were not all that literate. Two "ss" have the same sound as "c" in french. A few other variations of the name also occur.

Notes for C
ATHERINE CLERICE:
Both of Jacques wives were "les filles du Roi".

The term Filles du roi impies that these immigrants are the wards of Louis XIV and that as their protector, he assumes the duties of their natural father in taking care of them and providing them with a dowry. In New France, between 1663 and 1673, the question of dowries takes on a special importance since the authorities are going to urge, if not force men to marry them.
The conventional dowrites of country girls are usually made up of furniture, household articles, silver, land or other inherited goods. Sometimes, to these items, which are identified in the marriage contract, is added a prospective inheritance. Under normal circumstances, whatever their sex, all of a couple's children have the right to an equal part of the family inheritance. Even the poorest of girls can count on goods than, even if they don't belong to her at the time of the engagement, will come, one day, to enrich the estate of the family that she is preparing to start.
