New Bethlehem Centennial Edition, 1954; "Our Centennial Year by Miss Eva C. Himes (As written from material submitted by Mrs. M. T. Campbell) page 1 & 3: "About the year 1848 (Thomas McKelvey) conceived the idea that a grist mill would be a paying institution. He tried to buy out Jacob Shankle, the owner of the New Bethlehem mill property, but Shankle refused to sell at that time. After failing to procure the Shankle property, he bought the water power... Jacob Shankle built a new mill the same year at New Bethlehem, which caused him considerable opposition. Other drawbacks were the roads leading to and from the mill, big hills on both sides of the creek. He had built, chiefly with his own money, a bridge across the Redbank just below the mill. The bridge was not a very staunch one and only lasted a few years. It broke down with a team and wagon on it. John Humphrey, Amos McMillan, and James Nolf were on the wagon at that time. Humphrey was badly hurt above the eye..McMillan and Nolf each had a collar bone broken and Nolf was also injured on the head."

From "The Lincoln County Advocate"; Issue, Saturday, April, 29, 1876. "It's Married They Are: We clip the following from the Central, which will be of interest to our citizen's generally:
"It may be an old story to most all of Wausau (as old as the thing has got to be of the contracting parties), to announce that D.L. Anderson, of Jenny, and Mrs. Sarah Aucott, of Wausau, were told my Rev. Hageman, about three weeks ago, that they were hereafter one flesh. But, it's a fact; and it is either our fault or somebody else that we haven't told of it before, and wished 'em about half a column of joyous long life."
