Notes for N
ANCY ANN STONE:
Wisconsin State Census of 1870 for Town of Jenny, Marathon County lists as head of house: Stone, Isaac age 47; occupation lumberman; place of birth, Maine; children Alvin (age 20), Langley (age 15) and Nancy (age 12) all living with him. This would place Nancy's year of birth about 1858.

1896 Census for Lac du Flambeau lists: (689) Stone, Equa-sins, female, age 45; Ida, dau, age 17; Maggie, dau, age 15; Marvin, son, age 7. Nancy's age is incorrect and believe that this mistake was made when transcribing the census takers notes. Additionally, mention of Maggie was at first puzzling as Maggie died in Iowa in 1894. It is believed that Nancy listed Maggie in an attempt to solicit additional funds. It also solves the mystery of where Nancy went to on her yearly trips; we believe that she was traveling to LDF to be counted in the census. Equa-sins means "Little Girl" in Chippewa

The Antigo Daily Journal, February 6, 1933, page 4; Isaac Stone Was In Ackley Before Government Survey. "Nancy Stone Space is said to have been born in Hogarty. Her mother, a Chippewa, died at that time, and was buried in the then lonely wilderness cemetery at Hogarty."

Enrollment papers listed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Ashland, Wisconsin for the Lac du Flambeau, recorded on 25 Nov 1925, page 6: Nancy Stone Space, age 63, Degree of Indian Blood M.B. Ida Space James, age 45; Marvin Space, age 41; Elsie Space Vandiakie (sic; should be Van Derhei), age 32; Harley Space, age 28; Meda Space Huver (sic; should be Huven), age 26; Forest Space, age 23 (all listed as "Degree of Indian Blood M.B.)

"Nancy Stone Space was born in Spirit Falls, Wisconsin which at one time was a community unalloted Lac du Flambeau Chippewa...her mother died before allotments were made but was considered as belonging to this tribe. Two of Nance Stone Space's brothers were Lac du Flambeau allottees...The enrollment committee believes that Nance Stone Space is entitled to tribal rights.

"Regarding the rights of the children of Nance Stone Space above named. I wish to state that their father was a white man, and that the applications were all born considerable distance from the reservation in a white community. There parents were married prior to June 7, 1897...and are not entitled to tribal rights."

Marriage Notes for A
LLEN SPACE and NANCY STONE:
Marriage certificate lists parents of wife as Isac Stone and Care Stone. Note: I believe this information is incorrect. The witnesses are Isaac Stone, Nancy's father, and her sister-in-law Caroline Stone (nee Sprague), wife of Alvin Stone; as the same names appear as parents of the bride and witnesses I believe an error occured in filling out the registration. The groom's parents names are recorded as "Ch. Space" and "Sus Space".
