It was ceded to Louis XIV by the peace of Westphalia in 1648 and remained a part of France for over 200 years. After the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 it was returned to the newly unified Germany as part of the agreement of the Treaty of Frankfurt. Then it was restored to France after World War I as a condition of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. However, in 1940 it was annexed by Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich in his march across Europe. After World War II, in 1945, it reverted once more to French control.
