Notes for M
ATTHEW ROGERS:
"A History of Kentucky Baptists from 1769 to 1885", Vol 11, p. 67

Matthew Rogers, was an irishman, and probably born in Ireland. From whence he emigrated to Kentucky, is unknown. He settled in Nelson CO and erected a fort, on Beach Fork, near the present site of Bardstown, in 1780. He was a Baptist, and occasionally "exercised a gift," in preaching or exhorting. He was probably one of the original members of Cedar Creek church, the oldest organization of the kind, in Nelson Co, and next to the oldest in the State. He raised a large and respectable family, and is still represented by a numerous posterity, some of whom still linger around the site of the old fort. Of his six sons, three were preachers. Two of them moved West, and the third, Jacob Rogers remained in the area.

Rogers Run:
Matthew's name appeared in land records (deeds) of Hampshire CO, VA; court records for Yohogania CO, VA, and in early Kentucky land records. He settled in what is now Nelson CO, KY and received a preemption for 1,000 acres of land on 22 April 1780. In that year he helped his brothers James and Jonathan to erect a log fort named Rogers Station about four miles from Bardstown, KY.
