Descendants of John James and Justina Thruston

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 JAMES was born Abt. 1688 in England, and died Bet. October 13 - December 22, 1725 in James City CO, VA. He married JUSTINA THRUSTON Bef. 1712 in Bristol, England?, daughter of JOHN THRUSTON and ELLINOR CARY.

Notes for J
OHN JAMES:
Nothing is known about John James before he accmpanied his wife to Virginia in 1713 to claim her inheritance at Martin's Hundred. The exact location of Martin's Hundred, created in 1618, was north of the James, east of James City and on the west side of Skiffe's (Keith's Creek. It contained eighty thousand acres. (Several reports on the net list a Harwood Cary, 1685-1721 of Skiffe's Creek, Warwick CO, VA, married to Martha Thruston. Some state he was her second husband.)

Family Register of Nicholas Taliaferro with Notes by William Buckner McGroarty
William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, 2nd, Ser., Vol. 1, No. 3. (Jul., 1921), pp. 145-166.

30) The earliest record of the James Family seems to be that quoted in the Quarterly, Vol. 5, p. 276: "John James and his wife, Justina (Thruston) came to Virginia (James City Co.) 1713"; but the genealogical chain is in- complete. Bishop Meade (p. 259) mentions John James and Ann Strother, his wife, of Stafford, their son, Hon. Benj. James and the latter's daughter, susan Washington James, who was born in Stafford in 1804. Among the descendants of the three Gregory sisters who married Thorntons, a numer of girls were named Mildred after their mother, Mildred Washington. All of these were related to the Taliaferros and Battailes, and the writer has a feeling that Mrs. Mildred James was one of these, but, which one?

First page and a half of "Memoirs of the James Family of Virginia" By Edmund Garland James, Austin, Texas September 4, 1893. Contributed by his gg nephew, Hugh Nelson Seay , Jr. :

"We learn from oral testimony that two brothers of the name came over to this country from England about the year 1665, and that one of them settled in Virginia and the other in South Carolina.

Could this be one of the brothers referred to in the quote above?

Old Pronunciation Philip Alexander Bruce
William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 23, No. 2.
(Oct., 1914), p. 126. OLD PRONUNCIATION
As is well known, the Virginians of the older generation pronounced "James"
as if spelt "Jeames" or "Jemes". In examining a map of London and its environs
dated 1563, now in the London Museum, formerly Stafford House, I found that "St.
James Park", even then in existence, is spelt on the face of the map "St.
Jemes Park". It is evident from this that the old Virginia pronunciation of
"James" goes back as far as the sixteenth century if not earlier. Another
interesting object in this Museum is the painted wooden statue of an Indian
warrior used as the sign of a London tobacco shop in the seventeenth century.

More About J
OHN JAMES:
Fact 1: May also have had a daughter, probably the oldest child

Notes for J
USTINA THRUSTON:
Martins Hundred was a land company, a subsidiary of VA Land CO. formed in London.

In "Settlers Along the Shores of Virginia's York River, " by June Banks Evans, p. 7:
A report from the Virginia colony to Great Britain on July 8, 1702, included this division of church parishes:
James City County
Wallingford parish
Wilmington parish 133 tithables
James City parish 308 tithables
Martins Hundres parish 93 tithables
Bruton port parish (tithables counted in York parish)

Children of J
OHN JAMES and JUSTINA THRUSTON are:
2. i.   THRUSTON2 JAMES, b. 1715, Martins 100, James City CO, VA; d. February 05, 1780, James City, VA.
3. ii.   CHRISTOPHER JAMES, b. Abt. 1720, James City CO, VA; d. Bet. 1780 - 1787, Hanover CO, VA.
iii.   THOMAS JAMES, b. 1722, Martins 100, James City CO, VA; d. Unknown, VA; m. ALICE GARLAND, Unknown, VA.
  Notes for THOMAS JAMES:
Thomas was supposedly the 4th child. However, there is no documentation whatsoever proving Thomas as a child of John and Justina.

Having found a Christopher Garland in Gloucester CO, VA, I did some checking in that county re Thomas James and came up with the following:

Gloucester Query Board posts:
I'm researching Christopher Garland b. 1752 d. 1812 who lived in Glouscester Co., VA and married Sarah Burton first and one or both of these women Elizabeth Pryer or Mary W. Jarvis. Can anyone set me straight about his marriage. I'm a descendent of Sarah Garland(dt of Christopher) who married Bailey Chowning

Chris. had older brother named John Garland, Ch. born abt 1752.

Christopher Garland, son of Robert Garland and his wife Elizabeth Pryor, daughter of Christopher Pryor, all of Gloucester County, VA-- but there was this about his older brother John: "Their first son, John Garland, was born on the 22nd of October 1748 and departed this life on the 26th of July---" The year is obliterated by the age of the bible. The Garland Family Bible is in the Virginia State Library. Reference # 21256.

Garland-L
GARLAND, William; b. Nov. 1761 in Gloucester Co., VA. Parents were Robert Garland, b. 1721, and Elizabeth Pryor, b. 1725 d. 1786. Written in the Garland Family Bible located in the Library of Virginia is "William died on board a British prison ship in New York in 1782." I would like to find out more about this man and how he came to be a prisoner on this ship. Information about his parents also appreciated. Peg Price bearpaw@alaska.net

In the book called "Cumberland Parish" written by Landon C. Bell, I see

  Notes for ALICE GARLAND:
Vera Arbuckle Francis, James researcher, stated in her notes that Alice was the probable sister of Lt. Christopher Garland, U. S. Navy during the American Revolution. However, Vera also listed Thomas James as a son of John and Justina, and the father of Christopher, which has since proven to be not the case.
There was a Christopher Garland in Gloucester CO VA:
William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 15, No. 2. (Oct., 1906), pp. 123-124.
