Through the years Abilene Council has maintained its membership around a hundred. In retrospect the activities of this group have been a truly worthwhile contribution to the community. Since 1926 the Council has put on a Christmas party for the children of St. Joseph's home and of the parish. For many years Christmas baskets were prepared for the needy of the parish and, in cooperation with the American Legion, for the poor of the city. Each year a big party for the entire parish is sponsored and organized by the members. In the thirties the Council sponsored a troop of Boy Scouts and a basketball team. The Council contributes to and takes an active interest in "Teen Town", a supervised club for the youth of the city. It lends its support to the Red Cross, Tuberculosis, Cancer and similar drives, and cooperates with all civic organizations in community activities.

The Council contributed a large stained glass window to St. Andrew's Church. It receives Holy Communion in a body on Holy Thursday and the Feast of Christ the King. Advertisements explaining the belief of Catholics are now being run in the local newspaper. Abilene Council was host to the State Convention in 1927 and 1936.

"Mr. Newton"
Occasionally, over the years, communities lose individuals whose example and influence will long be remembered. Such a man was R. L. Hogan.
Dick Hogan lived and worked by a creed that always reflected consideration for his fellowmen and the good of Newton. From the time he first entered business here more than 40 years ago, he labored continuously for civic betterment and an expanding city.
No project was too small or too big for Dick Hogan to tackle. His organizational ability and leadership time and again provided the stimulus to carry to completion numerous fund-raising and promotional campaigns, all designed to improve the community.
In Chamber of Commerce work, his church affiliations, and association with municipal affairs, Dick Hogan provided wise counsel, dynamic energy and financial resources with unselfish motives.
Firm in his own convictions, he always was tolerant in considering opposing views, but never was subjected to pressure groups if he felt he was right. This was especially true during his period of service on the city commission and as mayor.
He pioneered in the development of the Newton Hotel Co., that was to give Newton the modern Hotel Ripley, helped to organize the Newton Country Club and, recognizing the value of an educational institution at the city's doorstep was an ardent booster for Bethel College facilities. Those are only a few of the countless contributions he made to Newton.
To his business associates and hosts of friends, Dick Hogan typified Mr. Newton. - L.S.

Wichita Eagle
Former Newton Mayor, 71, Dies of Heart Attack
NEWTON, KAN., Feb. 22 - Citizens of this community paid final respects yesterday to R. L. "Dick" Hogan who died Friday night of a heart attack at the age of 71.
St. Mary's Catholic Church was filled to more than capacity for the solemn Requiem high Mass which was said for Newton's number one booster and former mayor.
Msgr. J. G. Herman, pastor of St. Mary's Church and long time friend of Mr. Hogan, was celebrant of the mass.
In his closing remarks, Msgr. Herman expressed hope that Mr. Hogan's most recent project, raising funds for the erection of a new church for the Mexican people of Newton, could be completed as a memorial to him. (My note: Katherine Hogan, eldest daughter, was successful in completing this project.)
Mr. Hogan established the Hogan stores in Newton 44 years ago. He was prominent in church, business and fraternal circles.
From 1949 to 1953 he served on the City Commission, including one year as mayor. During his period as city commissioner he worked for the Municipal Waterworks' expansion program that has since been completed.
He was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a Fourth Degree Knight.

Notes for J
EANETTE (EUGENIE JULIETTE) VINLOVE:
Jeanette was 13 when her mother died. She kept house for her father at Ames until he remarried. She then moved to Abilene to live with her oldest sister, Mary Lucier. She worked in a tailor shop there until she met and married Richard Hogan. The tailor shop was probably owned by Phillip Lucier, Mary's husband.

She would tell her grandchildren: I wish I had seven little boys (girls) just like you. Then she would kiss your elbow. She always wore a corset, and often had her hair up in iron curlers. She was a wonderful cook, especially rice pudding I remember. She and grandad always argued about who would die first, but he did. She died about 2 years later.
