Find Family
We are researching the Schuetter Family from Alsace Lorraine, France. Andreas Schuetter(b.1816)is the first to arrive here in America.
Andreas(b.1816)was born in Alsace Lorraine, France on January 30th, 1816. Son of Andreas and Elizabeth Schuetter/Schitter. The Jasper Indiana history book states that Andreas is the oldest of Fourteen (14)brothers and sisters. Seven boys and seven girls.
Andreas arrived in New York in 1839, at the age of 27. Andreas did not come alone. There are five known lines of Schuetters from Andreas Sr. and Elizabeth. These ancestors are Andreas(b.1816);Christian (b.1819); Elizabeth ((b.1824);Michael (b.1833) and John (b.1845)the youngest who arrived here in America at a later time.

The Jasper Weekly Courier reported on Friday May 28th,1896 under the headline A PIONEER CITIZEN DIED the following:
Monday evening about 4:00 pm the news of the death of Andreas (Andrew) Schuetter spread over town. He had just died at the age of 80 years and three months and 25 days of rheumatism at his residence near Jasper Indiana.
Andreas came to Jasper with his young wife (Catherine Heisserer)in 1839. Soon after, his wife died. He was here before Father Kundeck, who was the first regular pastor of the congregation. He would drive to St. Mary's Church near Loogootee and bring Father Palais, afterward Bishop of Vincennes, to Jasper to read Mass for the faithful.
In October 1844, he married his second wife Genovfa (Geneveive) Hurst, by whom he had ten children, all of whom are still living and married.
Andreas Schuetter (b.1816) was the first organist in St. Joseph's church and the school master at the parochial school,Old Sisters Log House School. He was a valued member of the Church choir for many years...The Schuetter Clan or family is probably the most numerous in the parish. They are a sturdy healthy class as the few deaths show. They are willing workers in factory, farm and mines. They are light hearted with a strain for music, song and dancing. Also attached to the church where they regularly attend services.
