Notes for Ernst Theophil Holtzen: The depression was hard for Ernst. He lost his family farm in 1931 and found a job working at the broom factory in Deshler, NE for three cents an hour, twelve hours a day, six or seven days a week.
He had to retire when he had his heart attack.
He loved to fish and play music. He was self-taught on the instruments. He was a cute grandpa when he was up in age. He'd pull out his old German hymnal to sing hymns in German and I'd play the piano for him. He wanted to know why I wasn't singing and I told him I didn't know German. He said then how can you be playing the piano, the hymnal is in German.
One day he was working out in his garden (around 1969) and found his old confirmation ring that he'd lost when they first moved into town. He was absolutely thrilled and wore it until his death.
