Notes for Caroline Huehne: Caroline was a hard, coarse, outspoken person who did not spare the rod in raising her children. She was the midwife for the area and also the one people turned to for help at times of serious illness or death, or when in need of advice. Some said they'd ask her whether to wash on Mondays if the weather was questionable, or when to plant gardens. She told people to never become sentimentally attached to any property but to be willing to sell if you could get a good profit. She prospered to the extent that she gave each of her children a Quarter Section of ground.
After her children were married, she made her home with her daughter and family, the Peter Holtzen family. Peter built her a small house on the farm. After several years she moved to Deshler at 102 E. Pearl where she lived out her years.
One time Grandma Zutter and her son Herman brought a load of grain to town to sell. Grandma Zutter was so disgusted with the price that she had Herman drive the team of horses up and down the street while she scooped the grain on the ground telling anyone who would listen what she thought of the prices. Her second husband and she ran a hotel in Iron Mountain, MO. Caroline's second husband disappeared while taking money to the bank and was never heard from again.
The family preferred Grandma Holtzen. She would cuddle them on her lap and give them love. Grandma Zutter would tell them to get to work or meddle in the girls and boys lives as to whom they should date.
