Notes for JAMES GRANT:
A family group record found in the Grant family file at the Giles County Courthouse states that James was born ca. 1760 in Virginia. It has the following notes:
1. James Grant emigrated to North Carolina from Virginia, coming to Tennessee about 1812.
2. His brother, Thomas Grant, lived near him in Lincoln Co., b. ca. 1770, will signed May 19, 1843.
3. Asa Grant mentioned in will of James Grant.

James birth data on the website of Marty Grant is given as born 1765/1770 in VA.

Death date and place are the same in both sources.

Notes for ELIZABETH DAUGHERTY:
A family group record found in the Grant family file in the Giles County Courthouse gives Elizabeth's birth data as born 1761 in NC. Data found online at the website of Marty Grant gives her birthdate as 1770/1774, place unknown.

At the bottom of the tax roll is the sworn signature of Absalom RUSSELL, Clerk of the Court of pleas and quarter sessions of Franklin County TN.

It is not known which, if any, of these Russells is connected to Robert. Further research needed.

4. THOMAS² GRANT (JAMES¹) was born 1777 in VA ^10,¹¹, and died May 1849 in Lincoln Co., TN. He married (1) (UNKNOWN) Bef. 1811 in NC. He married (2) FRANCES DICKEY Bef. 1835 in Lincoln Co., TN.

Notes for THOMAS GRANT:
The 1830 census shows Thomas with his first wife and their 6 children. The 1840 census shows him with Frances, his second wife, and their 4 children. Thomas was not listed in the household with Frances and children on the 1850 Lincoln Co. TN census, as he died in 1849.

1843 Will of Thomas Grant:

I Thomas Grant do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at any time made. First I direct that my personal expenses and all my debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of my monies that I may die in possession of or may first come into the hands of my Executor. Secondly I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Frances Grant my tract of Land that I now live on and as much of my other property as my executor may think sufficient to support her and her Children to wit Elizabeth Mary Jane Grant George Harrison Grant Charlotte Catherine Grant & Virginia Frances Grant during my said wife Frances lifetime or widowhood at which time it is my will that it should be equally divided between my above named Children. Thirdly I direct that all the rest of my property be sold under the direction of my Executor and the proceeds applied to educating my above named Children. Lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint C. Deed Benja. Whitaken To Thomas Grant

I Benjamin Whitaken as Executor of James Grant decd do by virtue of the power in me vested by law and in compliance with a bond made by the said James Grant in his lifetime convey unto Thomas Grant for the considerations mentioned in said Bond (to wit) four hundred dollars paid to the said James Grant in his lifetime a tract of land herein described containing by estimation one hundred and thirty eight acres, lying in the Counties of Lincoln and Giles and bounded as follows, Beginning at a lynn stump, Running southeast one hundred and eighty poles to two dogwoods on McCracken's line, thence west one hundred and fourteen poles to a hickory, thence north fifty nine and a half poles to a Beech, thence thence (sic) West ninety five poles to a Stake thence North forty seven and a half poles to a Slipery (sic) Elm thence East fifty four poles to a hackbery (sic) stump, thence north thirty seven poles to a Beech thence East forty two poles to a white oak thence south twenty four poles to a hickory thence East one hundred and twenty four poles to the beginning, containing one hundred and thirty eight acres be the same more or less, provided however that therein(?) is three fourths of an acre of said tract of land Reserved on the east boundary for a public Burrying (sic) ground, to have and to hold to the said Thomas Grant his heirs and assigns forever, the title to which land I hereby by bind the heirs of the said James Grant to warrant and defend to the said Thomas Grant and his heirs against the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever as fully and effectually as they could be bound if the said James Grant had executed this deed himself according to the power in me by law vested.

We do not know which of the prolific Dickey family was Frankie's first husband and the father of John Wesley Dickey (b. 1819 in Lincoln Co., TN, m. Mary Jane King). We are considering the possibility that he was of the line of Ephraim Dickey, of SC, KY and TN.

The following information was sent to me by Anna Jean Dickey Springer <AJDickey@aol.com>. It is from Vol. 1 of the Dickey Source Book by Joseph Howard (Joseph H. Howard, 1113 Mainsail Dr., Annapolis, Md. 21403).

EPHRAIM E. DICKEY, (George, John, George, William, John, John, John, Robert) was born in York Co., S.C. circa 1771. Ephraim died 1840 in Lincoln Co., Tn. body was interred in Dickey Cemetery, Lincoln Co., Tn.

He M. Elizabeth ? circa 1801. Elizabeth died 26 Jan 1852. Her was was interred Dickey Cem. also Lincoln Co., Tn.

In the 1857 letter that Frankie wrote to her son John Wesley, she mentions "Your uncles Joseph McCoy and Andrew Roberts." Could Frances have been married to a son of Ephraim E. Dickey, a brother of Elizabeth, making this Andrew Roberts an uncle to her son?
