Descendants of William Senr. Lax

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM SENR.1 LAX was born in of Goochland, VA1.

Notes for W
ILLIAM SENR. LAX:
In correspondence dated 3 August, 1999, Darrell Rowlett of TX (CastawayDR@al.com) states: "...the earliest ancestor of the southern Lax/Lacks/Lakes family was William Lax, who was on a Lancaster, VA. tax list in the 1690s and is found as the "master" of a ship, the Ann & Mary, in 1705."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On August 9, Mr. Rowlett states: "In 1730, William Lax patented 200 acres of land in Prince George County, VA. on the south side of the Appomattox River "below his house." Also in 1730, a Thomas Moreton of Henrico County, VA. patented 354 acres in Prince George's County on the south side of the Appomattox River "above William Lax's land." And even at that early date there was another William Lax living in Goochland County, VA."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In looking through my research notes, I found a mention of information that had come from a fellow researcher, indicating that William Lax (Senr.) had married Anne Frankling. Unfortunately, the notation, dated 1996, did not name the source.

I also found the following query to the genealogy mail list for Goochland Co., VA:

      "Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 13:41:19 -0700
      From: "Anna L Wong" <ANNAW4@prodigy.net>
      To: VAGOOCHL-L@rootsweb.com
Subject: [VAGOOCHL] Thomas Frankling, will 1727

Does anyone have any information on Thomas Frankling, Will is dated March
31, 1727? Names children: Thomas, Ann Lax, Edmund and John. Anyone have
information on his son, Edmund and whom he married? Anyone know whom the
      father, Thomas Frankling married, etc.??

Anna - Phoenix, AZ - USA"

This warrants further research into the possibility of Ann Frankling as William's wife.

As to William's progenitors, nothing definitive is known.

However, Willis W. Lake (2400 Brook Run, Birmingham, AL 35244 (205) 988-3093) said in a letter dated Dec. 7, 1984 that he was pursuing research on earlier ancestors:

" I am still attempting to connect William Lax I to John Lake of Gravesend, L. I. in 1643, some of whose children married Dutch people in New Amsterdam and their offspring sometimes spelled their name Laak, Laaks, etc. I have found a few in Maryland and am pursuing their trail in New Jersey and Delaware."

In the letter, Mr. Lake also mentions other Lakes families of early VA:

"...Fauquier County had numerous Lakes and Drews in the 18th and 19th centuries, but I have been unable to connect them to 'ours'."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At a Lakes Reunion held in Berea, August 1996, I spoke with Spiffer (Moran) Lakes who cited research done by Willis Lake, with whom he has had personal contact (the above-mentioned 1984 letter was addressed to "Spiffer" and other family members). He said that Willis and other Lax/Lakes researchers believed that the Lax line had migrated thusly: American colonies<--- England<--- Wales<--- Isle of Man. On the Isle of Man (located in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland) there is a town named Laxey. Could that be where our early Lax ancestors originated?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At a genuki (genealogy of the UK) website, I found the following marriage record from Heightington, Durham, England (the given name Robert is common among our Lax lineage):

Marriages from the Heighington Registers (1570-1837)
12 May 1640 Robert Laxe = Jane Crosir

Further research of Durham records needed.
