Married in Baltimore Adelaide ... who survived him. He was a shoemaker. In the 1860 census, Adam and his wife and children are living with his sister, Philippina Grottendieck (see below under Philppina, and also Attachment ). I did not find him in the 1870 census of Baltimore, but in the 1880 census, Adam H. and Catherine (!) have five children living at home: Catherine, age 24, dressmaker, Theressa, age 20, dressmaker, Rosa, age 18, apprentice in millinery, Margaret, age 12, in school, and

John Herzog is in the 1860 census with wife "Mary"; he is 32, born Bavaria, and is a locksmith with $4,000 in real estate and $2,000 in personal property; children Mary, Joseph, John, and William are also in the household, as well as two tenant families (1860 federal census of Baltimore, Maryland, Ist ward, p.468; see Appendix, Attachment 33)
John Herzog is in the 1870 census with wife Josephine; he is 43, born Bavaria, a retail hardware merchant; also in the household are children Mary, Joseph, John, Willie, Emma, and Alphonsus, as well as eight tenants (1 870 federal census of Baltimore, Maryland, 1 0"' ward, p.26; see Appendix, Attachment 34)

He was born 02 May 1827 in St. Annen in the Kingdom of Hannover, Germany, and died 25 May 1893 in Baltimore ,MD.

HILIPPINA ALEXANDRINA HERZOG:
She was born 5 p.m. on 30 Sep 1831 at Kleinostheim, Aschaffenburg, Bayern, Deutschland, 63801. She was christened on 1 Oct 1831 just after 9 a.m. in the church at Kleinostheim, Aschaffenburg, Bayern, Deutschland, 63801. Residence: Kleinostheim No.43. "Fourth child." Godmother: Philippina Alexandrina, wife of the local resident [but not citizen; "Nachba'] Valtin Hauck of Kleinostheim. (R.C. churchbooks of Kleinostheim, vol-5, p.40). Still living in 1900 in Baltimore at 108 Clay Street, widow; she owned her home free and clear. Residing with her were her sons George and Joseph Grottendieck (George was a candy manufacturer, and Joseph was a messenger). Also living with her was Joseph Herzog, "boarder", wood carver. Both Philippina and Joseph stated that they had arrived in the U.S. in 1840. (1900 federal census of Baltimore, Maryland, 4th precinct of 2 nd ward, E. D. 30, p.5; see Appendix, Attachment 36). In the 1860 census, the family name is recorded as "Brodeneck"! Arnold "Brodeneck", painter, and wife Philippina had at that time two children, John and Mary in the household, and also the family of Adam and Adaline Herzog [see above] and children Catherine, Henry, and Theresa (1860 federal census of Baltimore, Maryland, 13t" ward, p.480; see Appendix, Attachment 37). In the 1870 census, Arnold Grottendick is still a painter, now owns real estate, and he and Philippina have four children in the home- John, Annie, George, and Cecilia (1870 federal census of Baltimore, Maryland, 1Oth ward, p. 140; see Appendix, Attachment 38)

Arnold Heinrich Grottendieck was born in Saint Annen in the Kingdom of Hannover,
Germany, on 2 May 1827, son of Georg Heinrich Grottendieck and Anna Maria, nee
Hinke. He died [in Baltimore] on 25 May 1893. He was married to Philippina Herzog in
Baltimore on 18 July 1854. 10th (http://familysearch.org; see Appendix, Attachments 39).

She married CLEMENZ OSTENDORF 12 May 1857 in Baltimore County, Md., son of GERHARD OSTENDORF and MARIA BORNHORN/PORNHORN. He was born 06 Jan 1834 in Lohne, Oldenberg, Germany, and died 15 Jan 1881 in Baltimore, Maryland , Buried St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

She was born 20 April 1834 around midnight in Heimbach (a small village between Mombris and Rothengrund; it had a population of about 50 inhabitants at that time-Josef Fecher). She was christened the same day in Mombris. Godmother: Catharina Wissel, unmarried, of Rothengrund. (R.C. churchbooks of Mombris, vol.2, p. 108) ["In Heimbach, the grandfather of Catharina Herzog, Johann) Georg Wenzel, had rented a farm. The business was conducted jointly until January 1881, when by the death of Mr. Ostendorf, the entire business devolved to the management of Mr. Hamman. The birthdate on Catharina Maria Bornhorn Ostendorf's gravestone is 8 September, but her birth record in Germany is 15 September. We can trust the German record.
