Notes for Charles Francis "Charlie" Darnell: A builder of homes - was said to have built part of Cincinnati zoo. Loved cane pole fishin'. Grew his own grapes for the family wine. Loved cane pole fishin', telling stories, and smoking a pipe. A great favorite of every child who cami in his path. Quite a "dapper" dude in his youth, but tamed by the mighty Florence. (he said he lived in Clifton from 1867 till 1887) Then on his own. From Susan Robertson: Clifton is in Kentucky - it is also Germany, as they called the area. I remember Daddy telling me of the fire on Christmas Eve (candles on the tree, no doubt) that burned the house at Clifton where they lived - 1898 or so, I think. That was when Daddy and Uncle Cotton and Aunt Lizzie moved to Duckers - they evidently bought the house and store and train station all together. Daddy sold his share in it in order to go to Medical School, the story goes - that was about 1904 . about 1948, we lived in Alexandria, Ky. for about two years. It was a suburb of Cincinnati, and Uncle Charlie would get on the bus and come to spend the day with us every couple of weeks. Our children adored him and would hide his hat so he couldn't leave. And I adored him - my own Daddy had died the year before, and he really helped me get through that time. Sometimes we would go fishing at a pay lake. It was a time I cherish. During World War II the term "I was born in Germany" was one the family was not very comfortable with, so, perhaps that is when they began to say Clifton. But you can see on the map,it really is Clifton. 1936 Scott Street, Covington, Kenton County, was his home. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/o/b/Susan-Robertson-KY/index.html
