Mary GALLAGHER nee TUITE, hotelier, of Scone, NSW
This studio photo is of my great-grandmother, Mary Marcella, GALLAGHER nee TUITE, who was born in 1846 in Merriwa (then known as Gammon Plains), who married Daniel GALLAGHER in 1869 in Singleton, and who died in 1904 in Scone, NSW. Her youngest child was Frances Catherine GALLAGHER, my maternal grandmother, born in 1882. Daniel and Mary GALLAGHER, who each had parents who ran a hostelry in Merriwa, bought the Railway Hotel at the Northern end of Kelly Street, Scone, and after the Great Northern Railway was opened to Scone in the 1870s, renamed it the Belmore Hotel. After Daniel's untimely death in 1882, Mary GALLAGHER continued to run the Belmore Hotel as sole lessee until her death. The original image has been kindly colourized by John Jacob of Canada.
