Updated November 4, 2005

This is the the first page of the web site of John SCHUBERT, family historian, of Sydney, NSW, Australia. Phone: (02) 9804 1030; overseas, 61 2 9804 1030. Email: johnschubert@hotmail.com

I have been researching all branches of my family tree since 1979, and now have some 2,500 individuals in my main SCHUBERT.FTW file, as well as many hundreds of other individuals in related secondary files. The information is stored in FTW files created with FamilyTreeMaker software, version 9.

My SCHUBERT records go back to a Carl Gottlieb SCHUBERT (1730-1808), who was born in Graebel, a small village near Bolkenhain (west of Breslau) in the Principality of Schlesien-Schweidnitz. Graebel (now known as Grobla), Bolkenhain (Bolkow), and Breslau (Wroclaw) have been in Poland since 1945, when the German-Polish border was moved to the west by the Allies, after World War 2.

Carl Gottlieb SCHUBERT was married in Hannover in 1764 to Phillipina Maria WENDBERGEN, who died in 1766. In 1767, Carl Gottlieb SCHUBERT married again, in Hannover, to Engel Sophia LUCKEN (or LUCKE), 1746-c.1817, of Hildesheim, and they raised a large family in Braunschweig. The second son, Gottlieb Philip Anton SCHUBERT, 1777-1848, went to England, married Hannah Jackson, c.1775-1870, of North Tidworth, Wiltshire, and raised a large family in Bristol, Gloucestershire. One of their grandsons, Robert SCHUBERT, 1837-1920, emigrated to Australia in about 1855 and is my great-grandfather. Robert SCHUBERT has hundreds of living descendants in Australia, most of whom live in NSW and Victoria. Robert SCHUBERT's older brother, Charles Ross Schubert (1835-1915), emigrated to NZ in about the 1870s.

Robert SCHUBERT's branch in England has been linked (by a professional genealogist of the Mormon Church) through its Luton-Hall-Emerson lines to some well-researched English and French families, and it has been extended back through King ALFRED-The-GREAT to the early Saxon King, Cerdic, who died in A.D.534. This remarkable link is shown in my GEDCOM file, SCHUBERT.GED.

The other branches of my family have generally been established back to several generations before their member(s) immigrated to Australia in around the mid 1800's. The IOM branches have been extended back to at least the 1600's, the non-Schubert English branches and the Scottish branches back generally to the 1700's, and Irish branches back to about 1800. The New Zealand branch extends back to about the 1870s.

The various LOCATIONS of my family tree branches and the key SURNAMES of the individuals therefrom are noted below:

  • 4th. Class Photo, Beecroft Public School, 1941 (3504 KB)
This photo of my 4th. class was taken in the grounds of Beecroft Public School in 1941. I am the shorter boy on the far left of the middle row. I was then shorter than the other boys in the class because I was generally a year younger than them. This happened because my mother had engineered for me to be admitted to 1st. class in the school at an age one year younger than the school's normal minimum admission age, because I "asked too many questions" when I was four.
