The Schermerhorn of Virginia Genealogy & Family Chronicles

Updated December 31, 2007

I'm trying to link up the SCHERMERHORN'S (dutch pronunciation SCARE-mare-WHOO-WRIN) from Schodack Township New York/New Netherlands Albany/Rensselaer Co.'s NY with my Virginia Branch. My gr.-grandfather John Poole Schermerhorn II (see picture)was 2nd Lt./1st Corporal/Private in the Confederate States Army, 1st Cavalry Reg.t Wise Legion, Army of the Kanawha,VA Mounted Rangers/Rosser's Mounted Rangers/Texas Rangers(Co. K) and Henrico Light Dragoons, Army of Northern Virginia (Co. I) from Richmond, VA/Henrico County. Their home known as Montezuma (I AM SORRY TO REPORT THAT THE REBUILT HOME (oRIGINAL BURNED 1880-1899)WAS RECENTLY DISMANTLED FOR ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE AND A NEW KINGDOM HALL FOR JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES) was Stonewall Jackson's HQ's (see picture)July 9-15, 1862 (on Mechanicsville Turnpike, 1 mi. ENE of Richmond)according to Special Orders, No.22, HQ Artillery Corps, Near Richmond, July 14, 1862, D.D. Pendleton, Capt. & Asst. Adj-Gen.--listed as Schermer[horn](SIC)House. Jackson always used a tent on the grounds, not the house as an HQ. Camp Schermerhorn in Henrico Co. during the WBTS was emplaced in wooded acreage(Dec., 1863-March, 1864) of Montezuma by permission of the landowner James Cornelius Schermerhorn (my gr.-granduncle) according to: UNDER THE STARS AND BARS. A History of the Surry Light Artillery, Jones,Benjamin Washington. Recollections of a Private Soldier in the War Between the States. Richmond: Everett Waddey Co.,1909., 1909. 8vo,297pp. The only eyewitness account of the Surry Light Artillery. "The area of Jones' travels with the Surry Light Artillery was restricted to the lower James River regions except for one move into Northern Virginia. His chief service was in the protection of Richmond. The book is made up of letters which Jones wrote to a friend and therefore has the freshness and reliability of contem-porary comment." -Coulter 264. "Jones's letters while a member of a Confederate artillery unit offer many insights into the life of wartime Richmond." -CWB I,114. Howes B192 (incorrectly listing the title as "Surry Light Infantry"). There is a Schermerhorn, The Netherlands where the family orginated and records earlier than 1699 are nonexistent due to a church fire there at that time. The President of Post-World War II Holland and the leader of the Nazi resistance was Willem Schermerhorn. I am told that the name "Schermerhorn" was used as the password of the resistance because if pronounced in clear dutch it was different and would be bastardized by those of German persuasion--thanks to cousin Dave Farmer for this insight. The individual that invented aerial photogrammetry had the surname Schermerhorn as did one of the chief designers of the polder system in The Netherlands. The name means a piece of land jutting out into the sea and appropriately described the topography of the region of present day Schermerhorn before land was reclaimed from the sea (thanks to Bill Schermerhorn of Ballston Lake,NY). Please let me know if Cornelius Schermerhorn who lived and died in Schodack NY b.c. 1765-d.c.1820-1835 rings a bell, his father is stated to have been Jacob Janse Schermerhorn (same name as The Immigrant in 1636-37 to this country) and would be the missing link in my family. If anyone knows where the letters of Isaac H. Schermerhorn are housed and where dropped numbered lines excluded from Richard Schermerhorn's Jr.'s, 1914 Genealogy can be found, please let me know at psidiverATbellsouthDOTnet

This is the Old Schermerhorn/Austin Montezuma Farm passed down from potter John Poole Schermerhorn Sr, d. 1850 homestead on Mechanicsville Turnpike, Hwy. 360, two miles East of Richmond, Va. The family burial ground is in the left foreground between the home and the highway in a grove of trees. The home is c. 1825-30 and reportedly burned and was rebuilt to specs. at some time c. 1910. Schermerhorn/Austin farm until 1880 when it was sold at auction to John B. Davis to settle debts. Davis. Was Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson's HQ during the Seven Days Campaign, July 9-15, 1862. Farm was advertised for sale in the 1860's during the War Between the States but could not be sold or was taken off market. Compliments to Robert E.L. Krick, Chief Historian, Richmond NBP/NPS , for the significance of the house in the WBTS. This house was between the middle and inner (star forts) defenses of the city of Richmond during the War. It was apparently just outside or near the tollgates to the Turnpike. A Schermerhorn ancestor was employed as Toll-Gate Collector according to census information (Wm. Francis Schermerhorn). Camp Schermerhorn, Henrico Co. was host to the Surry Light Artillery in March, 1864 on the Montezuma acreage on one side of the Mechanisville Pike (US 360). Montezuma subdiv. in Richmond got its name from this estate/property.

  • Ft. Delaware-Pea Patch Isl-US Prison for CSA POW's (54 KB)
This fort in the Delaware River near Delaware City, Del. was one of the prisons used to house CSA POW's. My first cousin three times removed, 2nd Lt. Samuel Horace Hawes, Richmond Howitzers/Williamsburg Arty./Orange Arty. Captured Spotsylvania C.H. "The Bloody Angle", May 1864, was one of the unfortunate Immortal 600, transferred from here to a position in front of friendly fire (read human shields) in Charleston Harbor, SC supposedly for retaliation purposes...he survived this use of Human Shields (none were killed by cannonading from Ft. Sumter)....he was eventually returned to Ft. Del. and was released near June 1, 1865. A great grand-uncle Sgt. Hugh Davis Smith (Crenshaw Artillery/Ellets/Walkers/Pegrams Battal.), briefly passed through Ft. Del. on his way to Point Lookout POW Camp in Maryland. He was exchanged Feb., 1865. He had been captured as part of a horse foraging party several days before Gettysburg along with his Captain, Ham Chamberlayne. Another great-granduncle, Clinton Drury Smith, (HDS's bro.)survived Gettysburg but was severely wounded at Jones House as part of Pegrams Battalion in the Petersburg/Appomattox Campaign. Another 2nd cousin 3 times removed, Major Jas. Horace Lacy, CSA of Chatham (now Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania NBP/NPS Headquarters) was imprisoned here briefly. Oddly enough I grew up less than ten miles from Ft. Del. as a child and knew nothing of the significance of this island to my family history. Also, I was born in Fredericksburg, Va and knew nothing of the significance of Chatham and Ellwood to my family story and relationship with the Lacy family that owned both of these during the WBTS.
