       1. Joseph Lewis , Sr., born October 31, 1769 in PA; died September 04, 1853 in Harrison County, OH. He was the son of 2. David Lewis and 3. Lydia Vernon. He married (1) Rachel Canby 1791 in PA. She was the daughter of Jesse Canby and Lydia Jefferis.

Deed for property bought from Benedick and Catherine Crawford in Archer Twp., Harrison Co., Ohio dated 6 April 1847. LDS film 0894193/4. Deed for property bought from John and Sally Dugan in Green Twp., Harrison Co. Ohio 29 March 1837. LDS film 0894194/4. Will of Joseph Lewis dated 8 Sept 1853. Will index LDS film 0894183. Joseph and Rachel were supposed to be Quakers. However they were buried in the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery in Cadiz, Harrison Co. Ohio. "Historical Collections of Harrison Co, Ohio" In the Sept 28 1934 "Boston Evening Transcript" in a Genealogical column it is stated that Joseph Lewis was the son of David Lewis a merchant from England and the oldest of 5 children.

Notes for Rachel Canby:
Rachel was mentioned in her father, Jesse Canby's will dated 11 June 1780. Will N. 3268 LDS film 1329129. In the Sept 28 1934 "Boston Evening Transcript" Genealogical column, it is stated that Rachel was a twin. I have not seen any evidence to prove that.

  i.   Jesse Lewis , Sr., born June 30, 1792 in Chester Co PA; died November 1872 in Harrison County OH; married Ester Unknown.

  ii.   Jacob Lewis, born August 14, 1793 in Chester Co PA; died February 05, 1883; married Sarah Christie.

  iii.   Joseph Lewis , Jr., born January 05, 1795 in Bucks Co, PA; died March 01, 1882 in Cadiz, Harrison Co OH; married Mary Benner.

  Notes for Joseph Lewis , Jr.:
Religion: Methodist Buried in the Bethel Methodist ch Cemetery at Cadiz, Ohio. Will dated in 1882. Harrison Co OH. Misc Deeds for property inHarrison Co. According to biographies of Thomas Lewis and Nancy Smith Lewis, Joseph's son and daughter-in-law, they returned to OH from IL and stayed to help Joseph with the farm during the Civil War. According to Mae Lewis Nichols, the family raised Belgium horses and the military came and got the horses from them.

Listed in the 1850 Mortality Schedule. She died at the age of 49 from consumption.

According to family tradition, she is of German stock.

  x.   William Lewis, born May 15, 1806 in Chester Co PA; died November 25, 1885 in Holmes Co OH; married Nancy Crawford.

  xi.   Rachel Lewis, born April 26, 1810 in Chester PA; married Michael Croskey March 13, 1831 in Harrison County, OH.

  xii.   Sarah Lewis, born November 24, 1812 in PA; died 1906 in Harrison Co OH; married James McKee November 24, 1834 in Harrison County, OH.

  xiii.   Hannah Lewis, born July 20, 1815 in PA; died March 11, 1897 in Harrison Co OH; married John Thompson September 27, 1859 in Harrison County, OH.
