| Welcome to my page! When I began genealogy, I was only interested in researching my own surname, SCOTT. I have since done a substantial amount of research on a number of my other surnames on my father's side. I have been able to trace my Scott lineage back to MOSES SCOTT, born between 1755 and 1774. He is in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1790 and 1800. The Scott families in Washington county, Pennsylvania emigrated there from Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Documents from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania state that a William Scott, who lived in Scotland in the latter part of the 17th century, was the progenitor of all of the Scott families in Lancaster county. By 1812, MOSES and WILLIAM SCOTT, his son, had moved to the part of the Ohio Territory that became Darke County, Ohio and are recorded as some of the very first settlers there. Moses and William both volunteered and served in the War of 1812. Both fought on the prairies north of what became Greenville, the county seat of Darke County, Ohio. Moses was appointed the first sheriff of Darke county, Ohio. He served one term. His son William was elected sheriff to the second and third terms. Moses then went on to Ft. Wayne, Allen county, Indiana, with the remainder of his family and settled there. He is last found on the 1830 census of Allen county, with his wife, Margaret. After marrying JEMIMA CRAGE (CRAIG) in Darke county, Ohio, William went on to Cass county, Indiana. Jemima died prior to 1829 and is buried at an unknown location. WILLIAM SCOTT is listed in 1829 as one of the earliest settlers in Cass County, Indiana. According to county records, he was appointed the first sheriff in 1829 and served for one term. On January 1, 1829, in the first recorded wedding (also a double wedding) in that part of Carroll county that was to become Cass county, William married OTILDA LOCKHART. William died on July 16, 1845. His obituary says he arrived in Cass County in 1828 and his obit referred to him as Col. Scott (although his War of 1812 military service papers only refer to him as a private). A cemetery canvas gave his year of birth as 1793. There was a JOHN SCOTT from Wayne county, Indiana who settled in Cass County, Indiana, the same time as William. John was the first Probate judge in Cass county. He had prior experience as a probate judge in Wayne county, Indiana. Wayne county adjoins Darke county, Ohio. I believe that John was a brother to William. My ggg-grandfather, ANTHONY LEE DAVIS SCOTT, was born in February 1830 in Cass county, Indiana. He fought in the 128th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War, enlisting as a Private and mustering out at the end of the war as a First Lieutenant. Afterwards, he moved his family to Cherokee County, Kansas. He worked as a farmer and then became a miner in the lead and zinc boom in southeast Kansas. He died in 1907 at the Old Soldier's Home in Leavenworth, Kansas and is buried in the National Cemetery there. His oldest son, George Warren Scott, settled in Newton County, Missouri, near Spring City and Racine. His farm was passed down to his second son and my grandfather, Donald Clifford Scott, who married Mabel Alderman. Donald died on 9 Oct 2004 at 95 years of age. Other surnames I am researching include ALDERMAN, ANDERSON, BARCUS/BARKES/BARKUS/BARKHURST, DEWEY, FORCE, GILSTRAP, GRAY, HARRIS, JACKSON, MENDENHALL, MICHAEL, TAYLOR, WATSON and WILCOXSON. I want to thank my wife, Karen, for her assistance and patience and my uncle, Robert Boaz, for his expert advice and inspiration. I also would like to thank the many family members who generously supplied information, photos, and their time. Randy Scott |
