The genealogy research presented on this home page is part of a research project on the immigration history of Southeastern Kansas. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cherokee County and Crawford County, Kansas were centers for the coal mining industry. The readily available employment and the need for skilled miners attracted many immigrants from all areas of Europe. Historians often refer to the area as the "Little Balkans" because of the diverse mix of ethnic groups that came to inhabit the area.
Southeastern Kansas was an extremely unique area during the early 20th century, for no other area in the Midwest had as many European immigrants. This mix of cultures made for colorful social and political interactions. Cherokee County was the site of countless labor uprisings, socialist rallies, and women's marches.

Both sides of my family have a history in Southeastern Kansas. My mother's side of the family immigrated to Cherokee County in 1901 from southern Italy. They worked for many years in the coal mines and lived in the company mining camps. My father's side of the family, whose immigration history is unknown, also lived in the area. Being of Irish descent, they had higher social status and were able to get more prestigious jobs as railroad and mining supervisors. My geneaology research has played an important part in my understanding of the history of this area.

The history of this area is virtually unknown, and I would like to change that. I hope that you find my research as fascinating as I have! Please feel free to contact me by e-mail if you have any pertinent information.
