Descendants of Paul Freed, Sr.
Generation No. 1
1. Paul1 Freed, Sr.1
died Unknown.
Notes for Paul Freed, Sr.:
From the Freed Book of 1919...
The first [Freeds to arrive in America] were Paul Freed,
John Freed and Paul Freed, Jr. [apparently from Bavaria]. I take it for granted that it was the father
and two sons and their families. They
arrived in Philadelphia about 1727 or soon after. Settled in Germantown, where Paul Freed was naturalized in 1729
or 1730. They must have been here a few
years before that time.
They next settled in Skippack, where Paul Freed owned 100
acres of land in 1729.
It will not be out of place to state right here that on
February 22, 1702, a patent was granted to Matthias Van-Bebber for a tract of
land of 6166 acres; recorded in Book A, Vol. 11, page 463, in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. This being the southeast
half of Skippack township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Van-Bebber sold this in small tracts or
farms to suit purchasers.
In 1734 all the Freeds owned land of said tract; and lived
on them.
I failed to find any record of the death of Paul Freed,
Sr., or where he is buried. The most
likely place is the Germantown Mennonite meeting-house; the grave is not
marked.
[His sons] John Freed and Paul Freed, Jr. were married
before they came to this country, shown by arithmetical calculation. They came to America about 1727, seventeen
years before John died (1744), 62 years old.
The children are all grown and married.

Reiff7, daughter of Hans Reiff. She was born in Lower Salford, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania,
and died 17738.
Notes for Peter Freed:
From the Freed Book of 1919...
age 76 years.
Subsequently he added a codicil to the will in which he
bequeathed to his daughter Elizabeth 50 extra, and to his daughter Catharine 25
for their faithful attention in his old age.
He also bequeathed 25 to the Mennonite meeting of Lower Salford, and the
same amount to the Skippack Mennonite meeting for the use of the poor. According to the will there must have been
eleven children.
In those early days the spirit of land speculating
prevailed to a certain extent among the farming community. Peter Freed was no exception to this
activity. On March 26, 1746, he bought
of Hans Reiff 246 acres, situated in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania, for 280. In 1756 be
bought of Jacob Clemmer 98 acres, for which he paid 298, and owned it 19 years;
then sold it back to its previous owner (Mr. Clemmer) for 470, an advance of
172. This and future transactions show
his business qualifications. After this
sale he bought 215 acres of John Schuler, of Upper Hanover Township, located
below Harleysville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. This property lately belonged to the Alderfers. This property he divided, cutting off 115
acres for his son John, who resided on it eleven years without succeeding in
business financially. Joseph Wismer
held a judgment note for œ800 against the property which he foreclosed, and
Sheriff Zebulon Pott sold the property on the fifth day of June, 1787 to Joseph
Wismer for 575.
After this John Freed is lost to historians, at least I
failed to find any record of him after that time.

Descendants of Jacob Freed
Generation No. 1
1. Jacob1 Freed1
was born in Palatinate (Bavaria), Germany, and died Unknown.
Notes for Jacob Freed:
Lived near Bethlehem, Pa.
YELLIS C. FREED wrote this in "History of the Freed
Family" :
September 19, 1752 arrived another Jacob Freed from
Amsterdam, Holland. This Jacob Freed I think was the father of John and Jacob
Freed. My uncle Joseph F. Freed, left some writings, stating that he gathered
from some old documents, that his great-grandfather, which would be the father
of John and Jacob, that he lived near Bethlehem and that he had other children,
and that some of them moved to the western part of Pennsylvania. From this I
gather that the western Pennsylvania Freeds descend from the same ancestors
that the eastern Pennsylvania do. Whether more than one went west is yet
uncertain; the future may give us more light on the subject. There was a
sister, married to Abraham Rieser. They visited my grandfather, who had a young
peach tree with two peaches on it, which he showed to Mr. Rieser, being proud
of the fine fruit, thinking some day to taste its fine flavor, but his guest
put out his hand to pluck them. Stop, said grandfather, they are not ripe, to
which the guest replied, I guess I won't get them any better, and ate them.
This seemed somewhat comic, though mortifying to grandfather.
HENRY W. FREED wrote this in the "Freed" book:
Whatever may have been the motives of our German
forefathers and others, that prompted them to leave their fatherland and
emigrate to America is not known. The country may have been portrayed to them
as a fine and delightful place to live and where they could worship God
according to the dictates of their own conscience, or by the invitation of Wm.
Penn to come to America to settle, till the soil, populate and improve the
country, or whether to avoid the war and persecutions they were subjected to at
times to undergo does not matter, at least they came to America.
France and Germany have been more or less continually at
war and in particular the Palatinate and lower Rhine, which at last turned to a
religious war, the people of the Palatinate and lower Rhine being Protestants
and those of France, Catholics, and the people of the Palatinate were at times
overwhelmed and horribly treated and murdered by the Catholics, their wives and
children cruelly put to death by the sword, their houses and barns burned to
the ground, their cattle and everything they could lay hold on was taken from
them so that they had a miserable existence and many of the inhabitants of the
Palatinate and lower Rhine being of the Mennonite persuasion and being opposed
to bearing arms and going to war, and therefore made up their minds to emigrate
to America.
Even in 1683 the Germans formed a colony north of
Philadelphia, gave it the name Germantown and it has kept the name to this
present day and it became the seat of many industries; the Germans were a race
of spinners and weavers, it became a leading industry in the new world. The
first Mennonite meeting-house is still standing and services held therein. The
first German newspaper in America was published in Germantown in 1732.
Later, among the emigrants came our forefathers, the
pioneers of the Fried family, Hannas (John), Jacob and Peter Fried, supposed to
have been three brothers, and embarked at Holland for America, but not at one
time, and landed at Philadelphia at different dates, John in 1747, Jacob in
1752 and Peter later and settled down in the eastern part of Pennsylvania; John
in Montgomery County, Jacob in Bucks County and Peter in York County, Pa. The
country was at that time chiefly inhabited by Germans and Quakers, and the
Germans by taking and buying farms and clearing them of timber and rubbish and
by cultivation, managed to raise some grain, potatoes, flax, etc., and by
spinning and weaving managed to raise large families, their children grew up on
coarse food and home-made clothes and became strong and hearty men and women,
and we as their descendants enjoy the fruits of their toil. Pennsylvania may
yet feel proud and give credit to the Dutch that the eastern part is what it is
and has often been called the Garden Spot of America, for go where you will,
you will hardly find nicer cultivated farms, houses, barns and farm buildings as
in the eastern part of Pennsylvania. Our forefathers, who with many others,
came from the Palatinate, where they speak the same language that is here
called the Pennsylvania Dutch language, and they spoke the same here when they
came to America, and it is spoken yet to a certain extent by their descendants
in the eastern part of Pennsylvania. The Germans have been making American
history by their thrift and achievement that they ever occupy a prominent place
in history and to demonstrate the fact, no less than a dozen men of German
extraction have occupied the executive chair at Harrisburg, Pa.
The object of the following genealogy is to preserve and
place on record the most remote history of the Freed families, in particular
that of Jacob Freed and his descendants, although his children are scattered
over all parts of Pennsylvania and adjacent states, save one son Henry, and one
daughter Mary, who married and stayed in the vicinity where they lived makes it
impossible to trace them all. Jacob Freed had also a brother, John, in
Montgomery County, which was left to my friend, Isaac G. Freed, North Wales,
whose report will accompany this work and also the report of Peter Freed of
York, Pa., by William Freed of York, Pa., and others.
It has been my desire for many years to know more about
the ancestry and the particulars connected with the progenitors and their
descendants than the meager legends and traditions related to me, by individual
members of the Freed family; but as it is often the case, we have waited too
long to get it fully correct, or as near correct as we would like to have it,
on account of their demise, so we have endeavored to get what we could and
preserve it and perhaps in some future time the members in the western part of
the state of Pennsylvania, where three sons of Jacob Freed did reside, may make
an addition to it. Had it been begun earlier, when the third generation had
been living, it might have been collected more accurate, but which, by their
demise, is lost forever. Even now the thread is lost to many who are not able
to trace their lineage farther back than their grandparents and some even not
that far and some even totally unaware that they belong to the Freed family at
all, were we young and could have traveled over the state (but age forbids), or
had even our letters been duly answered we might have got more information, but
which was not always done satisfactorily. In order to gain more information of
the Freed family and get better acquainted with each other, we had taken the
matter into consideration to have a reunion of the Freed families and their
descendants and to meet on August 15, 1912, at 10 o'clock A. M., at Perkasie
Camp Meeting Grove, Perkasie, Bucks County, Pa. Prior to the meeting credentials
were sent to every family known with heads, and instructions printed thereon
for them to fill out, giving date of birth, residence, when married and to
whom, how many children, deaths, etc., and present them at the meeting and it
met with a liberal response, about two hundred being present and they seemed to
be favorably impressed with the meeting and a resolution was then adopted to
meet annually on the third Thursday in August; but sorry to say, those from the
western part of the state were not represented, but hope they will come in the
future; as three sons of Jacob Freed went west, as far as we know to
Connellsville, Fayette County, Pa., viz.: Paul, John and Jacob, may hear from
them later, but so far we found no one able to connect the relationship to
them.
The following officers were then elected by the meeting:
President, Isaac G. Freed, North Wales; Vice President, J. Ralphus Freed,
Doylestown, Pa.; Secretary, H. B. Alderfer, Souderton, Pa.; Treasurer, Henry W.
Freed, Richlandtown, Pa.; Historians, Isaac G. Freed, Henry W. Freed, J.

Family" :
August 1, 1747, landed in Philadelphia the ship
"Bilander Vernon" from Rotterdam, late from Leith, Scotland, Thomas
Ricks, master. Among the passengers
came John Freed or Hans Friedt ... from the Palatinate, or more definitely,
from Bavaria. When he was about 21
years old, he settled in the neighborhood of (Flatland) Quakertown, Bucks Co.,
married Susan Detweiler. On the tenth
day of June, 1769, they bought of Jacob Grove and Frances Grove, his wife, 130
acres of land and the hotel at what is now Franconia Square, for 700 pounds.
They kept the hotel there during the Revolutionary War. After the battle of Germantown, the wounded
were taken on wagons to the hospital in Bethlehem; in this battle the Americans
lost more than 1000 in killed, wounded, prisoners and missing. The battle took
place on the third day of October 1777 and the wounded were most likely moved
the next day. Going up the Allentown road they stayed all night at Freed's
hotel, leaving the wounded in the wagons. The next morning puddles of blood
were under the wagons, and the groaning of the sufferers was heartrending. I
think I was told that the dogs did lick the blood.

JACOB FREED arrived in Philadelphia September 23, 1752.
Also from Rotterdam, Holland, late from Palatine (Bavaria). He settled in the
neighborhood of (Flatland) Quakertown, and was a brother to John Freed; to him
we will refer later again.
HENRY W. FREED wrote this in the "Freed" book:
JACOB FREED, one of the forefathers of the Freed families
and their descendants, first came from the Palatinate (which is in German,
Pfaltz), which was formerly a political and independent state of Germany,
situated what is now Bavaria, and embarked at Rotterdam, Holland, which was
their seaport, for America and after a long sea voyage, landed at Philadelphia
on September 23, 1752, and as far as we know, came to America young and single,
and married in this country Miss Elizabeth Heffletrager and settled down in
Richland township, Bucks County, Pa., near the village of Quakertown, as it was
called at that time, on or near the banks of the Tohickon Creek, where he lived
on a farm and by thrift and hard labor he raised a large family; he died but
the date of his death is not known, nor his age, but he must have died about
the year A. D. 1800, as per release on record at Doylestown, Pa., 1807, from
the heirs of Elizabeth Freed, wife of Jacob Freed, to their brother Henry
Freed, who was administrator of the estate of Elizabeth Freed, deceased, and
also a power of attorney given by Abram Freed, a son of Jacob Freed, from
Mahantongo township, Northumberland County, Pa. (now Snyder Co.), given to
Israel Foulke in 1809, to act in his name in the estate of his father Jacob
Freed, deceased.
As they belonged to the Mennonite persuasion they are
supposed to be buried in what was then known by the name of Drissel's
meeting-house, now known by the name East Swamp Church, in Milford township,
Bucks Co., Pa., but as no records were kept in the church at that time and no
tombstones set at their graves, at least that can be read, we therefore are at
a loss to locate their graves.
May they rest in peace.

Notes for Jacob D. Freed:
ISAAC G. FREED wrote this in "History of the Freed
Family" :
On the tenth day of June, 1769, his father bought the farm
of 130 acres and hotel of Jacob Grove and his wife Frances Grove, for ?700, at
what is now Franconia Square; where they lived before is unknown to me. I think
they lived there before they bought it. The deed states of Franconia. Therefore
I think my grandfather, Jacob Freed, was born there. He served as deacon 37 years in the Franconia Mennonite meeting.
In 1806 he sold his farm near Franconia Square to his
brother Joseph for ?800, and bought the John Oberholtzer farm on the north
branch of the Perkiomen Creek, where he spent the rest of his life. The house
was of a peculiar structure; one end was stone, built in the hill side, one and
a half story high; the other end was first built, first story stone, the second
story logs, the same length as the first story, but narrower, the deficiency in
width was covered over like a porch roof. The main roof of the house was the
same height over both. The farm was rather productive, and stayed in the Freed
family for more than sixty years. The farm is now small, the greater part has
been sold to adjoining neighbors. The homestead has reverted to the Oberholtzer
family. William, a grandson of John Oberholtzer, owns it now (1810). This farm
had been our playground when I was a boy.
Aged 79 years.

ISAAC G. FREED wrote this in
"History of the Freed Family" :
They bought a farm in
Hilltown township, Bucks Co., Pa., where they followed farming during life.
They were thrifty and industrious, and saving in their habits, by which means
they saved about $18,000 during their natural or married life. They left no
issue and no will, consequently the estate went to his relatives; the Freeds
were left out. I will state here to his honor that he had intended to make a
will, dividing the estate in two equal parts: One part to the Russel family,
and the other part to the Freeds. Delays are dangerous, he delayed too long. A
stroke of paralysis disqualified him from executing the document. He rallied
for some time until April 3, 1874, when death relieved him of his suffering.
Mrs. Russel died first... They are
buried at the Blooming Glen Mennonite meeting-house, where they held their
membership. Their graves are near the east end gate.

From the Freed family book...
They lived in Franconia Township, Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania, near the Franconia Mennonite meeting-house, on the 40-acre farm
which he bought of his brother Jacob for 800 pounds. This was originally part of the Hans Freed 130-acre farm. Deeded
April 1, 1806. They lived there until
April 8, 1831; then he sold it to his son Isaac for $1400. (After Isaac's death
the heirs sold it for $4150.) After he
had sold his farm to his son, he bought a farm near the Reformed church at the
Indian creek; they lived on this farm until his death.

he was born in this country and a son of Jacob Freed, which we think is most
correct, or if he was born in Germany and a brother to Jacob Freed. (Peter Freed of York might have been a brother of Jacob and John Freed and
came from Germany, and if so we cannot account for Peter, the son of Jacob.

May 17, 1829, daughter of John Godshalk and Barbara Kratz. She was born August 15, 1807 in New Britain
Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and died February 11, 1844.
Notes for Abraham F. Freed:
ISAAC G. FREED wrote this in "History of the Freed
Family" :
Born on part of the old Hans Freed homestead, which his
father bought of his brother John on August 13, 1791 (40 acres for ?275) and
built thereon.
On April 1, 1806 his father, Jacob D., sold the farm to
his brother Joseph for 800 pounds and then moved to the farm on the north
branch of the Perkiomen Creek, which he had bought of the estate of the late
John Oberholtzer; there Abraham was raised and stayed with his parents until he
married. Then he took his father's
farm, worked it on shares, that is he gave his father one-third of the grain,
and kept one horse and two cows for him.
Thus he continued after the death of his father in 1847. After the farm
was sold to uncle Joseph F. Freed, I think he paid about $33.00 an acre for it;
in about 1810 or somewhere along there his father was offered $100.00 an acre
for it, when the farm was about twice as large. He would not sell it, as
everything was high then, he said it was not worth that much. He wanted a farm,
and he would have to pay more for another one than it was worth.
It might not be out of place to remind you again that
Abraham's mother died in 1821, and his father married a second wife; the house
was a double one, and his father, Jacob with wife, Susan, lived in one end and
Abraham's family in the other end. In this house I and all my brothers and
sisters were born; and here my mother died.
This house was of a peculiar structure. It was built in the side of the
hill; the hillside end, one and a half stories high, stone wall, the other end
was stone, one story; the second story logs, the whole length of the house, but
narrower. The sides of the first story were covered with a kind of a porch
roof. The main roof was the same height over both ends. The farm was fairly
productive, and stayed in the Freed family for about twenty years more. The
farm is now small, the main fields have been sold off to adjoining
neighbors. William Oberholtzer, a
grandson of John Oberholtzer, is the present owner, 1915. Here we had our
playground.

Notes for Joseph F. Freed:
ISAAC G. FREED wrote this in "History of the Freed
Family" :
Worked on his father's farm, and probably helped his
brother John at weaving until 1827 when he bought part of his father's farm and
built on it. He had now a farm of his
own, which he worked in connection with running a commission wagon to
Philadelphia. Some years later he added
a small country store, dry goods and groceries. After his son John was grown he took the commission wagon, and
went to Philadelphia for a while, but was taken sick and died June 15,
1854. I think the marketing business
was discontinued, and the store some years later, when they moved on the old
homestead which he bought after his father's death. Uncle Jo., as we used to call him, was one of those persons we
meet only occasionally. He was strong,
both physically and mentally, which prepared him for the severe trials of life;
besides, he was of a reconciled disposition which enabled him to bear trials
with patience and manly courage, which might have been beyond endurance by a
weaker disposition. His wife, Aunt
Anna, was of a melancholy nature.
Had six children with the first wife and one with the
second wife. He died of kidney
disease. Aged 73 years, 1 month and 11
days.
