Thomas³ Scott, born June 15, 1718 in Caroline county, VA; died Aft. 1778 in St. Mary's Parish, Caroline County, VA.

      3. Capt. John² Scott (Unknown¹) was born Bef. 1699, and died 1765 in Bowling Green, Caroline county, VA. He married (1) Jane Todd Abt. 1716, daughter of Thomas Todd and Elizabeth Bernard. She was born December 28, 1699 in King and Queen Co., VA, and died April 28, 1731 in "Clifton," Orange county, VA. He married (2) Elizabeth ? Aft. 1731.

"Capt. John Scott, founder of the Scott Family in Orange County, VA, settled in Orange, then Spotsylvania, by 1729 on a 1,000 acre tract purchased from Col. William Todd of King and Queen County, for 50 cents an acre. Much effort has been expended to learn the origin and antecedents of Captain John Scott but with little reward. Nugent's "Cavaliers and Pioneers," Vol. 1, p. 44, shows a John and Mary Scott living in New Kent County in 1663. Also the Quit Rent Roll of this county for 1704 lists a John Scott owning 300 acres. (Werenbaker's Planters of Colonial Virginia, p 219)
      "In Prince George County Records is a deed bearing the date August 20, 1720, from John Scott, Sr. to John Scott, Jr., conveying for natural love and affection certain land patented on June 16, 1714. A descendant of Thomas Scott of Caroline County states that Thomas was the son of James Scott, of Aberdeen, Scotland. In Caroline Order Book, 1746-54, p. 336, August 10, 1752, Rice Williams' deed of gift to Thomas Scott is proved by the oaths of Johnny Scott and Mary Seton(?) witness there to. It seems most probable that John Scott was the brother who came to Virginia with James Scott, father of Thomas Scott."
