"Mary (Brown) Platt, The wife of Gilbert Platt of Henrico, as previously r ecorded, was by her first marriage the widow of Joseph Tanner of Henric o, and it is probable that her maiden name was MARY BROWN, inasmuch as Wil liam and Mary College, in 1699, brought its aforementioned suit against Be njamin Branch of Henrico, "as the executor of Edward Osborne, who marri ed the executor of John Brown." This same John Brown was presumably the fa ther of Gilbert Platt's wife; and she had at least one sister, Martha (Bro wn?) Stratton, who was the second wife of Edward Stratton of Henrico, a nd died in
1696.
The will of this Martha Stratton, who survived her husband, is dated 24 th of July, 1692, and was recorded at Henrico Court-House 1st April, 169 6; it mentions the testator's "Sister (Mary) Platt," and "her daughter, (M ary) Liggon," and appoints the former to be the executrix of the estate--w hich was not large."

Notes for T
HOMAS SHIPPEY II:
Thomas Sheppey entered into an agreement with Edward Hatcher and John Dav is to go on a trading expedition with the Indians, 1672. He described hims elf as of Bermuda Hundred, 1 Aug 1678, in a deed to Edward Stratton, Jr ., who had married Sheppey's daughter Martha. He had three tiltables in Ap ril 1679. His land in Varina Parish (Bermuda Hundred) was mentioned in a p atent of 23 April 1681.

Notes for E
DWARD STRATTON, SR.:
According to Hattie R. Stratton the diary of Robert Thurston indicat es an early marriage between a Thurston and a Stratton, which could have b een Edward's first wife. She relates that the Thurstons were closely conn ected to the Gibbs family and that research of these two surnames could re veal the wife's name. The list of 1624 and 1679 of persons in Henrico cou nty however does not contain either name. No Strattons are in the 1624 li st, and only Edward Stratton, Jr. as head of household of 3 perso ns is in the 1679 list. Between 1671 and 1676 he purchased 287 acres of la nd from William Byrd, deed dated July 1, 1681, in consideration of 1,600 p ounds of tobacco. The land was originally granted to Martin Ela m. It is not unlikely that his ancestry may be found in Wiltshire, Englan d. Wills of Edward Strattons can be found in the prerogative court of Can terbury. Edward Sr. died at his house in 1688.

EDWARD STRATTON, Sr.

Records of the name "Stratton" at Bermuda Hudred appear about 1677-1678 (M rs. Martha Stratton and Edward Stratton). Edward Stratton was among the ea rliest investors in lots. Edward Stratton was of English ancestry and he s ettled in Bermuda Hundred about 1677 and became a planter.

Edward Stratton (~1633-1688) married his first wife Elizabeth Thurston? c a. 1653. [Edward married secondly, Ms. Margrett ___]. He married his [thir d] wife, Martha Sheppey, a widow about 1678. He died Abt. 1668 in Bermuda Hundred, Henrico county, VA2. She married (2) GILBERT PLATT Aft. 1668. He died Abt. 1692 in Henrico county, VA.

Notes for M
ARY (BROWN), (TANNER) (PLATT):
Mary Tanner Platt's sister, Martha, widow of Thomas Shippey, was the seco nd wife of Edward Stratton, Sr. Her Neice was Martha Shippey who marri ed Edward Stratton, Jr. She was one of the witness of Edward Stratton's w ill. In a sworn statement qualifying as her sister's executrix she stat ed that she was born in 1638. Her will dated March 18, 1699, record ed in Henrico, February 1, 1699/1700, mentions her grandson Thomas Jone s, son of Martha Tanner Haskins, by her first marriage. James Branch Cabe ll in his book "Branchiana" says that her maiden name was probably Brow n, in as much as William and Mary College, in 1699, brought suit against B enjamin Branch of Henrico, "as the executor of Edward Osborne, who marri ed the executor of John Brown." If this is true then Martha Shippey Strat ton's maiden name would also be "Brown". I have tentatively used the (Bro wn) surname in this record.
