He received 40 acres on a homestead patent on Jan. 28, 1924 and eventually owned 640 acres in South Dakota. He died on 17 January 1959 in Hot Springs, Fall River Co., South Dakota, at age 66. Notes for ANDREW RUEBEN BYKOWSKI: 3-19-02 Andrew Rueben Bykowski was born on 3-18-02 at 8:45 a.m.,weighing 6# 15.6 oz., and 15 inches long. He was born a little person, as was expected. He cried out three times upon leaving the wound via C-Section. Andrew was born with thick, beautiful, black hair like his mommy, and silver blue eyes like his daddy. He is very cute. It became neccessary to place him on a ventilator so he could breathe. As planned, he was then evaluated for possible chest expansion surgery. I was able to spend many hours with Andrew in the newborn ICU. The staff there were wonderful, caring people. Perla was in her room unable to come to the ICU as she was recovering from surgery and the effects of anesthesia . At 1:00 p.m. they told me we were going to have Andrew transfered to Driscoll Children's Hospital for a chest expansion surgery. This is his only chance for survival. The Driscoll team arrived at 6pm . Before he could be transfered he had to be placed on a conventional ventilator . He was presently on an osillating vetilator that gave up to 600 breaths per minute. The traditional can only give up to 90 breaths per minute. Andrew was not able to tolerate this, and his carbon dioxide levels rose to a critical level. It became clear that Andrew would not live long even if he stayed on an ocillating ventilator . So, as we had planned all along, we withdrew life support at 11:15 p.m. Andrew's strong heart finally stopped at 11:59... one minute before his mother's birthday. The hospital was kind enough to allow Andrew to be brought to Perla's room where all of Perla's family, my Mother and Father, my Aunt Barbara, Bill Roberts, his brother Roger, and I were gathered . When he was removed from life support , Perla held him and kissed him, and then passed him along to all who wished to hold him. This was a very tearful, but beatiful scene. He went to heaven loved by all who love him, and although it was more difficult than I thought it would be, it was the right and loving thing to do for our son, Andrew Rueben Bykowski . The neonatologist told me he had seen two other infants like Andrew, but neither made it out of the delivery room alive , so Andrew, in a sense, was still a miracle.
