2. MATTHEW³ STRICKLAND I (JACOB², THOMAS¹) was born February 20, 1626/27 in Westmoreland, England, and died Bet. May 05, 1696 - August 04, 1699 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He married ELIZABETH LORRAINS Bef. 1665, daughter of ANTHONY LORAINS and ANNE BINNES. She was born Abt. 1641 in Liverpool, England, and died 1724 in Isle of Wight Co, VA.

There is, as yet, no proof as to who Mathew Strickland's (the original immigrant to Isle of Wight Co. Va) parents were. There are about 100 of us that have been 2 or 3 years (as the English Research Project) on trying to prove this.

The Stricklands were extremely numerous in Westmoreland, but there were also groups in Yorkshire (that originally connected to Westmoreland), London and elsewhere.

There is currently a hearth tax project going on in London to try to post online the hearth tax (as a substitute for the census) that was taken in the late 1670's.

There are many English vital records that have not been transcribed because the people that control them oppose the
Mormon Church doing the microfilming (on religious grounds).
There are also, of course, a lot of records that are missing,
including some of the records in Westmoreland that are in
the relevant time period we are talking about.

It is EXTREMELY unlikely that this Mathew descends from the Sizergh Castle Stricklands. That family is said to have
the best set of family records in England (called muniments).
In the 1800's the family had a professional genealogist publish a book about their family tree and gave him access to the records. I have read this book, and almost all lines are accounted for. The family insists that they had no descendants that went to America, but that there were some in the Yorkshire group. They gave no citation regarding the Yorkshire immigrants. The family does not want to be involved with the attempts to tie Mathew Strickland to their family.

All of Matthew's known male descendants for generations named their male children out of the Bible, except for the
first name of William. Personally I think that Mathew's father was a William, based on this.

Most recently a DNA study was completed, but since we could not get any English Stricklands to participate, the study merely confirmed whether or not one descended from Mathew (and didn't tell through which line one descended).
