Traveled with his friend, Jesse Hughes, through what is now Roane County from the Sinks of Gandy in Randolph County to Ravenswood in Jackson County where he settled in 1801.
He was a leader of a band of Tories at Tories Mountain on Gandy Creek in Randolph County.He was loyal to the Crown of England, being a descendant of Ralph Gandy who came to America in 1658 from Suffolk Shire, England, settling in New Kent County, VA.On May 1, 1776, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania Artillery and changed his name to "Gandee."He applied for a pension in Jackson County in 1835 but was rejected.
He and Jesse Hughes brought supplies on pack horses to Tanner's Cross Roads(present day Spencer) in the spring of 1813 that saved the settlement.
In 1814 or 1815, he claimed 100 acres of land on Gandee Run at Reedyville.This was his bonus for services in the American Revolution.He built a trading post and a grist mill, and was a dealer of wool, furs and herbs.
