Notes for Steven Coerte Van Voorhees:
Steven, Willemptje, and their six children emigrated to America, sailing 15 Apr 1660 from Amsterdam aboard "De Bonte Koe"; Captain Pieter Lucasz was master of the ship. Steven purchased land in Nieu Ammersfoort (Flatlands), on Long Island in 1665, and in 1670 they were members of the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush. He and his wife were prominent in the affairs of the new settlement and they served as sponsors at several babtisms in the Flatbush Church. There are many descendants of this marriage and several intermarriages of Sebring-Van Voorhees during the following generations. A genealogy of the Van Voorhees family has been published (The Van Voorhees Family in America; NY, 1888. Condensed and republished, NY, 1932). Some of the children used the name Stevense only.

Notes for Jan Stryker:
First of four families to settle Midwout, later called Flatbush, Long Island.
Jan was an armorer or gunsmith by trade, and was an elder of the Reformed Church of Flatbush while Rev. Johannes Theodorus Polhemius was building the first church on Long Island in 1654. Jan Stryker was a Magistrate of Midwout in 1654 and again in 1673. He was a member of the Colonial Assembly and a Captain of Kings County Militia.

As written in Volume 3 of the Somerset County Historical Quarterly in 1914 (pp. 118-124): "The male ancestor, however, so far as known, was Jan Roelofse Seberinge....He was born in Holland in 1631, and came to America, it is claimed, in 1660, in the same ship ('De Bonte Koe) with the Van Voorhees family.
