Descendants of Benjamin Marion

Generation No. 1

1. BENJAMIN3 MARION (JEAN2, GABRIEL1) was born 1633 in Chaume in Poitou, France. He married (1) MARY. He married (2) JUDITH BALLUET 1675.

Notes for B
ENJAMIN MARION:
Huguenots driven from France by revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the
Marion & Cordes families came to Carolina in 1685 and settled in St.
James' Parish between Charlestown and the Santee River.

A Marion heirloom known as the "Huguenot Cup" was brought to this country by Benjamin Marion.

A copy of the letter received by Benjamin at that time reads as follows:

"Your damnable heresy will deserves more in this life than purgation by fire which awfully awaits you in the next - But in consideration of your youth and worthy connections, our mercy has condescended to commute your punishment to perpetual exile. You will, therefore, instantly prepare to quit your country forever, for if after 10 days from the date hereof, should you be found in any part of the Kingdom, your miserable body shall be consumed by fire, and your impious ashes scattered on the winds of Heaven.
(Signed) Pere Rochelle"

Benjamin and his wife Judith immigrated to the Carolinas, landed at Charelstown. He became a planter and settled on the Peedee River.
