Note, from Critic, May 12, 1889. John Powell of Newport News, yeoman and ancient planter, patented 150
acres of land in Elizabeth City Co. 1624. John Powell
was born, 1595, came to America and to Va. in 1609. He was a Captain. His wife
Katherne, born 1602, came to Virginia, 1622. Their son John, b. 1624, was
probably the Captain John Powell who was a
Burgess for Elizabeth City, 1657, 1659 and 1660 and 1676. It is thought that
their descendants resided in York county.
