David McMasters was apparently very good friends with James Stanton, a physician from Nantucket, Massachusetts, son of Benjamin and Abigail (Macy) Stanton, because David gave his first born son the middle name of Stanton. James Stanton repaid the compliment by naming his first born son Edwin McMasters Stanton, later Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln.
