John Butler (b. April 10, 1707)
Notes for John Butler:
[butler.ged]
b13: My page number 13 of W.P. Butler's genealogy, John is No 10.The "b" denotes the geneal ogy by Walter Percy Butler (c1939), which I keep is a seperate binder and is approximately 19 4 pages in length.
Of the 8 children of William and Hannah Hills Butler, only the lineage of John is enumerate d further.Of the 9 children of John and Sarah Foster Butler, only the lineage of John and C omfort are furthered.
Of the 13 children of John and Chloe Norton Butler, only the lineage of Samuel (of Deposit) i s enumerated further.
The "s" denotes the page number of my resource binder(s), which contains misc research notes , abstracts, birth, death, and marriage records, etc.
s133: This information (on John/Sarah and family) is from the FHC Family
Group Record (FGR) film #428137 (c1965).It appears that some of the data may have been take n from Walter Butler's genealogy. Some of the information conflicts, e.g. on the FGR, the bi rthdate for John is recorded as 13 April 1707, Walter states that that is the date baptized .Also, in reference to the recorded birthplace of John, I suspect this should read "prob. W ethersfield".Unfortunately, I found no sources listed on this FGR, although a place to reco rd same is available (it is possible such reference exists and that I failed to record it) .This record, and the FGR's on John
and Chloe and Samuel and Elizabeth, do offer additional information, e.g. the
birthdate for Sarah Foster, which was not given in Walter's record.
I have made every attempt to record this information "exactly" as it appears in my source doc umentation and to put any deviation from this in parentheses. This data base (created using t he genealogical computer program "Personal Ancestral File" aka PAF) contains over 17000 indiv iduals with related notes and not all records have been completely and/or indexed and cross-r eferenced.
My interest in the Butler surname:Certain court records (involving the estate of Frances Lo uise Butler) strongly indicate that my GGGgrandfather, John R. L. Butler, was the grandson o f John and Chloe Norton Butler. It is my intention to complete the lines of all of the mal e children of this marriage in the hopes of determining the parentage of John R. L. Butler .It
appears research has already been done (see notes concerning "The Descendants of John Butle r of Cherry Valley" in the text below, also the family of James
appears to have been well documented) but I have not yet been able to locate this research ma terial.
From the notes of Alta Janes Butler c1950, source unknown: "There is a Genealogy of Descendan ts of Patrick & Mercy Butler.April, 1950 Argosy Book Store, N.Y.C. advertised misc. genealo gies of Descendants of John Butler of Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., N.Y.; James Butler of State n (sp) Island; Abel Munn Butler; Nathaniel Butler, inidentified.By Henry May, Roxbury, Mass . 1870 (15 folio sheets $7.50)"

"No. 31.Lieut. Comfort Butler, son of John and Sarah F.
Butler (No. 10) was b. Nov 16, 1743, Middletown, Conn. and
d. Feb 19, 1826, probably at Middletown.He m. Jan., 1765,
Mary Berry, dau. of Divan Berry. He was apprenticed to a
shoemaker at an early age.As he was much troubled by a
fellow apprentice of a quarrelsome disposition, he told his
master that if he must fight, he preferred to fight the
enemies of his country rather than on of his own mates, and
that if the shoemaker would allow him to enlist in the army,
he would serve out the balance of his time after his return.
The shoemaker consented and Comfort enlisted at the age of
sixteen, but to his great surprise he found his fellow
apprentice of the quarrelsome disposition was a member of the
same company, whereupon they settled their differences and
became fast friends and remained so until the close of the war,
when Comfort returned to fulfill his agreement with the
shoemaker.
After his marriage, he moved to that part of Wallingford now
called Meriden, where he had four children born prior to the
Declaration of Independence, four more while the Revolution
was in progress and one after peace was declared.
On Sept. 4, 1764, Comfort and his brother, John, acknowledged
receipt of their shares in their father's dwelling house in
Middletown.Comfort's children, of which there were nine,
were all born at Meriden, Conn. They were:" (as enumerated
in the notes for Comfort).b27
The reference quoted in this genealogy for the information
on Comfort and family was "History of Wallingford, Conn., p.55 1."
The lineage's of two of Comfort's sons (John b. 1770 and Lemuel
born 1775) were extended in this genealogy as numbers 56 and 57
respectively. Both sons remained in Meriden their entire lives
and there is no indication that any of their children removed
to New York.

during which some 9000 cannonballs were hurled at the French
defenders, Fort Louisbourg has fallen to the British colonial
forces from New England. The British victory may well foretell
the destruction of the French presence in the maritimepr ovinces. The invading expedition sailed from Boston harbor on
March 24 and was joined at Canso by smaller groups from New
Hampshire and Connecticut ... "CoA

Mehitable infant.
1748 Mar 1Peter chose his grandfather Edward Foster as his guardian.b13
Other than Peter, it is unknown if any of the remaining
children were distributed among relatives, but that prospect
is likely.

1754 abtSarah Foster Butler Boudoin died. (my guess, see below)
(Hannah age 24, William 22, Peter 20, Sarah 18, Ruth 16,
John Jr. 13, Comfort 10, Thomas 9, Mehitable 6)
If the year of death for Sarah Foster Butler Boudoin is
correct, it seems reasonably certain that those children not
distributed among relatives when their father died (abt 1748),
were distributed upon their mother's death.John Sr. had one
brother (Peter) and 6 sisters, no further data on them is
contained in this genealogy. It appears that at least Comfort
remained in Middletown until his marriage in 1765 (b27).
1754 Jun 27William (age 22) deeded to William Rockwell "all my right in
the estate of my grandfather Edward Foster, deceased, for that
my mother Sarah Butler (alias Boudoin)) deceased was one of
his daughters, as well as in and unto the estate of my father

QUERY:Did brother John (age 19 in 1760) also join the army?
Would that explain his reason for chosing to remove to Saratoga
abt 1777? (i.e. his familiarity with the area from his army
experiences?)

Thomas were both close in age and in their sibling relationship.
(Thomas removed to Ninesburgh, Chittenden, VT and died there
in 1826.Comfort appears to have remained in CT and John and
Chloe removed to New York State.
