Notes for John Elliott:
John Elliott came to Giles County in 1812. During this period, many settlers poured into Giles Countyfrom the Carolinas, Virginia and Alabama. In 1816, he bought 128 acres on Richland Creek at Elk River, part of 5000 acres granted by North Carolina to William Shepherd and Joseph Phillips, grant number 185 dated 12/20/1791. During the late 1820's he moved his family to Fayette County, Tennessee. Fayette County was formed in 1824 from parts of Hardeman and Shelby counties. It was a farming community, and cotton was an important crop. Most of the farmers owned slaves, including John Elliott, who was listed on an 1836 tax list as owning 150 acres and one slave. On April 15, 1828, the county court settled a case brought by John Elliott, plaintiff, against Jacob Ross & J.R. Burteson, defendants, where the court ordered payment to John Elliott the sum of thirty dollars and eighty cents plus one dollar for damages. On July 17, 1828, John Elliott, together with James Douglass were appointed commissioners " to treat with Oliver Leviston for his bridge across Wolf River and value the same and make such proposition as they may think proper to him..." John Elliott is listed as head of household in the 1830 census of Fayette County . According to the census he was 50 to 60 years of age at that time. The next house hold in the 1830 census was that of Alexander Birdson, whose eldest daughter, Laura Gastry Birdsong, married William K. Elliott, probably around 1835. William K. Elliott witnessed the recording of the deed when his father-in-law sold his property on 12/12/1836. John Elliott appears as a head of household for the last time in the 1840 census of Fayette County, when he was 60-70 years old.
On December 24, 1845, a deed of gift was recorded in the Fayette County records as follows: "For the love and affection I entertain for my son John F. Elliott and for the further consideration of one dollar to me in hand paid I do hereby give transfer and convey to him....a bay 2 years old named Spring also two cows and calves....an ox cart two sows and pigs...." This is the last known record in Fayette County for John Elliott. It is presumed that he died there, although no cemetery listing or death record has been found.
