I (Joy) was told by Rubell Hagen,an older lady from Benson, MN, that Ole Einerson was a school teacher in Big Bend, MN.She said that he taught at the small country school she attended.I met this lady when I posted in the Lyon-Lincoln Electric Company paper, a desire for the old blue "Concordia"hymnal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church that I was raised in, and through which I learned to play the piano.She had been the secretary for the pastor who did "Lutheran Vespers" on the radio and she had three copies of the hymnal.My mother, sister, Mary Ann, and I went to Benson to meet her and I purchased a copy from her.Until her death we corresponded occasionally.She died at some 90+ years.I told her that when I was a child there was a man named Norman Hagen that would attend Einerson family gatherings.She confirmed that he was a member of her family.I do not recall now what the connection was, though I know that he was a relative of the Einerson's and mother knew about it.
My grandfather, Oscar Einerson, had six siblings.I believe the oldest was Synova.She was married to Jens Kalstrom.They lived by the river east of Milan in Big Bend township, quite close to the home place. They had four children: a girl names Clarice, whom I believe was a nurse, twin girls named Margaret and Charlotte (beauticians who had their own shop in Montevideo, and Walter who was married to Olive.The girls never married.Walter and Olive had two sons:David and Wilbur.David was gone by the time I came to live with Einersons, but Wilbur was a teen-ager.He married and divorced Janice Tostenson, also of Big Bend township.Wilbur became a pharmacist after graduating from SDSU.I am most familiar with this family because we spent a lot of time with them during my childhood years.
One of the Grandpa Oscar's sisters died of cancer; I recall that they did not want me to go into the room to see her.There was a woman they called, Emma Christ, (It was their way of saying that she was named Emma and her husbands name was Christ.),I don't know who was the Einerson, her or her husband.Simon Jorgenson's mother was an Einerson sister so perhaps she was Emma Christ.(The i is like the i in list)There was also a woman named Mina Larson who was a relative.Her husband was Henry Larson (died young) and they had a daughter named Rudell Blom (married and lived in San Francisco area) and a son named Valgene (served in WWII and married Ruth from LA. where they then moved.Mina called Grandpa Uncle Oscar so one of her parents was probably a sibling of Grandpa's . She lived in a senior high rise apartment in Minneapolis until her death.
There were many family gatherings with the Einerson family when I was a girl. We celebrated birthdays, holidays and had family reunions in Smith Park in Montevideo, MN.Food and Norwegian music were a big part of the gatherings at Walter and Olive Kalstrom's home.Their son, Wilbur, played the piano, Walter and Oscar Kalstrom played the violin, Simon Jorgenson played the banjo and my grand-father, Oscar, played the violin also.The women always gathered together to gossip and when "lunch time" came they prepared wonderful open-face sandwiches to go with the cakes, bars and pies.There was always hot coffee and fruit nectar. (Watkins)At the annual Einerson Family reunion in Smith Part the women brought hot dishes which they wrapped up in newspaper and dish towels to keep them warm.There were homemade pickles of all kinds, pies, cakes, cookies, breads and rolls.All made from "scratch".The men and women separated into groups and the children ran and played.There was always a picture taken.
