| We are researching the Medlin Family of Monroe, Union County, NC. We have researched as far back as a Richard Medlin, born 1647 in Redruth, Cornwall, England, along with his wife Rachel. We do not know much about her except that a Medlin researcher visited Cornwall this past summer, 2002. She was able to locate records of a Richard and Rachel Medlin in the church of St. Eury's Parish in Redruth, Cornwall, UK. Rachel's nee name may have been Franck or French. This is the church where Richard was baptised. Richard and Rachel entered the US through the port of Charles Towne, SC in 1678 sailing from England and landing in South Carolina from the ship "Carolina," and migrated up through NC to the counties of Granville, Bute, Franklin, Chowan, Bertie, etc., even into New Kent County, VA. They then settled in Montgomery (now Stanly) County, of NC, but moved on to the Anson/Mecklenburg/Union County area of NC. We can confirm lineage from Henry Tyler Medlin, b. 1750, d. 1781 in Mecklenburg County, NC, while a soldier of the Continental line. Some of our relatives may have come from other areas of NC, and may have migrated to/from other states. My great great grandfather, Willis Medlin, b. 1795, left his wife, Nancy (whose maiden surname we believe might have been Helms, daughter of William and Rebecca Broom Helms), and five children, and "went west." We have found him in Pickens County, SC where it is believed that he started a whole new family line with a much younger wife, Mary Nunnelly/Nunnery. Any information on Willis' second family is greatly appreciated. Willis and Mary apparently had a son, Steven Willis "Shug" Medlin, born about 1858, who was listed as being age 5 on the 1860 SC Census, yet his birth date on his tombstone says 1848. He died in 1936. We are also trying to prove Willis' first wife Nancy's surname and whether or not he received a divorce from her. We welcome information from any and all descendants or possible descendants of the clan. Other names in our family lines are Cuthbertson, Conder (Konder, Gonder), Broom/Broome, Simpson, Orr, Gingles, Russell, and Morrison. Any information on any of these names would be greatly appreciated. We are also happy to exchange family lines if evidence of connections appear. We are always eager to exchange information on the Medlin name, as well as others in our family. Any information you have and would share with us will be greatly appreciated. |
