SERGENTS 1715-1993 Well Madison who are we This family where you are the youngest one A clan a group who love the land Where farms pass from Father to Son In Orange County North Carolina the first known lived His name was William and they called him Bill He raised a large family on the land Owned slaves and yes he had a still When old he set about to divide his things At least that's what I am told The land and slaves he gave away But the still was to be sold for gold Some of the children stayed there in North Carolina While Stephen and his family moved on west Not too far though did they go To find a place that they liked best There they carved out a homestead In eighteen fifteen he left it all To Ephraim and his other children He left the land to answer God's call Ephraim and wife Mary Hodge had David Named after a Bible lad He moved to Western Virginia With his family and all that he had His son Henry David was with them on the trek A boy on a spotted horse then only a twelve year old lad When he was twenty the farm came to him Purchased from his brother, Jim That establishes us here on Johnson Creek Where now five generations have joined in His Son William Madison, then Henry Carl Followed by Robert Lawrence loved the land Like all the generations before They plowed, planted and planned Now Mark Gerard your father Has come to inherit the soil To mix blood and sweat in this place With not a little toil So Madison look around you This the place where you call home Keep it, love it, but always return to it Wherever you may roam Started 2-15-93---Edited 5-1-95 |
