In 1863, James Hurd Crabb enlisted in Company H, 48th Tennessee Regiment, under General Bragg and Captain Lewis Miller in Lawrence County, Tennessee. He served 14 months before supposedly having a finger shot off in the Battle of Chattanooga.
In 1871, James Hurd married Lucinda McDonald Heathcock. She was the widow of Dr. Stanford Heathcock, a surgeon during the Civil War who died at Pontotoc
