- Where Our Ancestors Lived in Germany (33 KB)
We came from the northern part of Germany known as Schleswig-Holstein. I have marked the map with the towns I have found on birth, marriage, and death certificates. The majority of these came from the oldest member of the branch and their children so you can get a good idea of the areas they lived. I have color-coded it so that each branch has their own color. I noticed when I did this that one of Matthais' son moved to Brenkenhagen which is the area where the Asmus Bebensee family lived. Recently I have found out that Theodore Bebensee came from Lensahn which is also the same area as Asmus Bebensee's family lived. I am getting closer to linking these three branches!

- Louise Strohbehn's Prayer Book (143 KB)
When I spoke to Bill Bebensee (William Jr.) in California, he told me the story of a prayer book that his dad had given to him. (See the scrapbook for a picture of the inscription in the book from when Louise was confirmed.) It was a song book or hymnal that was given to Louise upon her confirmation. Bill used this book as a starting point in researching our relatives when he went to Germany as it had the name of the small village where they lived. Louise's mother, brother and sister left Germany shortly after the confirmation date. Bill was able to look up the church records in Lutjenburg and visit the church where she was baptized and confirmed. While in Darry, Bill looked in the phone book to see if there were any Strohbehn's still living there. He found a name and decided to drive by the house. When they got to the house, there was an old woman there sweeping the walk. Bill took a chance and approached her and asked if she was any relation. He showed her the book and she said that was her grandfather's sister that had gone to America to marry a Bebensee. Her name is Brunhilde (Strohbehn) Schell.
- School Picture from 1911-William, Harry, and Fred (122 KB)
This picture shows my grandfather Harry Bebensee and his two brothers William and Fred. It was reprinted in the Atlantic Herald newspaper. The teacher later became a principal and teacher in Atlantic. My mother had her as a teacher. They both had the same birthday and she would always invite my mother to her office for a piece of cake. She was mean to the other kids but always nice to my mother. My maternal grandmother remembers some of the other children in this picture and my mother played with some of their children while growing up in Atlantic, Iowa.
