Notes for George Johann Shaffer: George Shaffer, the paternal grandfather, was born in Germany in 1740 A.D. He came to America as a young man and settled in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania in the Kishoquillis Valley. In the war with England he joined the Federal Army and fought for liberty until it was obtained. He returned to his home in Mifflin County as a farmer. He died in the Valley. His son, Henry, was born in 1766. Catherine Weaver was born in Woodcock Valley in 1770. Henry and Catherine were married in 1791. They lived in the Kichoquillis Valley, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania for about fifteen years. They moved to Summerhill Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, on a tract of land adjoining Jacob Weaver, Sr. and William Plummer, which he sold to John Knepper during the War with England. He also joined the Federal Army and fought for the Liberty.
The following children were born to them: Jacob, December 27,1792; Susannah, 1794; Henry, 1797; Elizabeth, 1799; Mary, 1801; John, 1804; Catherine, 1807; Barbara, 1811; Sarah, 1814.
Henry Shaffer died in Cambria County in 1818, age 52 and is buried in the Mennonite Cemetery between Geistown and Scalp Level in Pennsylvania. Catherine, his wife, died in 1847, age 77, and is buried in Dunmire Cemetery.
