| In May of 1998 my father gave me directions to the "old family homestead" where he had grown up in Mineville, Nova Scotia. My visit there to see the ruins of the old house my father was raised in and the Shaw family cemetery, and to see for the first time the names of my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents, was the beginning of a search for my ancestors that has introduced me to "cousins" all around the world. It is no easy feat researching a family tree! How and where to find the names of ancestors, who often went by middle- or nick-names; not realizing that they did not come directly to their last known place of residence but through some other part of the country; surnames that were shortened or Anglicized after arriving in North America; family stories and legends littered with just enough mis-information to throw you completely off track; dead-ends and "brick walls" that sometimes seem insurmountable. I'm sure anyone who has spent time looking for family can empathize! I am fortunate that I was able to start much farther back on my tree than many other people can. I count myself extremely lucky that my mother was still alive and able to recall an amazing amount of detail about not only her own parents and their families, but my fathers parents and their families as well. I was also very lucky in that quite a few of my ancestors have been well documented by other researchers before me and it was simply a matter of connecting to one of their unfinished branches. As always, the information contained herein is a work in progress. There are undoubtedly some errors and omissions. If you find yourself or your family in my tree I would love to hear from you and exchange information if possible. My database currently contains information on over 23,000 individuals of which I am allowed to list up to 2,000 here. I give great thanks to the "real" researchers out there (I do not claim to be a great researcher!) who had painstakingly assembled whole parts of my family tree before me, and who were so willing to share with me what they had. I give full credit to the origin of my data wherever possible but if I have missed anyone - Thank You! |
