| Our Ferrell line has been traced to John Ferrell, born about 1689 in Ireland. His son William Ferrell, born about 1740, appeared on a list of tithables in Botetourte Co., Va. on the Clinch River in 1772. His name also appeared on a roster of militia soldiers serving the Glade Hollow Fort, in Russell Co., Va from August 26 to Nov 6, 1774. William Ferrell was listed as an appraiser of several estates in 1777, 1778, and he appraised the estate of Richard Lynam, on May 19, 1778. William was scalped and killed by Indians at his home on 15 Jun 1778. His wife Martha and seven children survived the attack, by taking refuge in the nearby fort. Their fourth child, William was born about 1774, and he married Jane Jackson of Culpeper Co., Va. William (Jr) and Jane Jackson Ferrell were the parents of John Owen Ferrell born 1 Jan 1800 in Russell Co., Va. John Owen Ferrell married about 1820 in Russell Co. to Sarah Elizabeth Allison. Their child James Michael("Mike") married Martha Gandee in Jackson Co., (W)Va on 21 Sep 1848. (I have changed James' parentage from William & Rebecca to John and Sarah to conform to most Ferrell researcher opinions) Martha was the daughter of Uriah Gandee, Jr. and Massie Hughes. James and Martha were found in the 1850 Jackson Co.,(W)Va census with their first child, 11 month old George Washington Ferrell, my Great Grandfather. George W. Ferrell married Willmuthann Gunnoe on 19 Nov 1871, in Kanawha Co., WV. Willmuthann "Wilmuth" listed only her mother's name as Priscilla on her marriage record.
James Michael "Mike" Ferrell and Martha Gandee had 6 more children and settled in the Elk District of Kanawha Co., WV. George's sister, Sarah "Ann" Ferrell, born 20 June 1851, also married a Gunno/e-Martin Van Buren Gunno. Gunno/e researchers identify Jacob and Priscilla McCrary Gunnoe as the parents of Martin V.B. "Van" Gunno, although I find that "Daniel" was listed as the father of Martin "Van", on his death record.
Other children of James and Martha Gandee Ferrell, include #3 Levi, born about 1854, #4 Richard J., born about 1857. #5 Louise born 10 Aug 1860, married Alexander Lee Taylor. #6 James Irvin Ferrell born 22 Feb 1864, never married. #7 Unnamed Female Infant, born in March and died in August of 1870. No further record of Martha Gandee Ferrell, or child #3, Levi has been found since the 1870 census.
Willmuthann Gunnoe Ferrell was born 5 Mar 1848, and died 8 May 1900. She is buried in a small cemetery located on the property of what was called the Browning Field. This is located up Sugarcamp Hollow at the head of Lick Branch. There are only about 13 graves in this cemetery and only one other besides Wilmuth's that is marked.
