Notes for John J. Cooper:
Lena Cooper King, a great granddaughter of John J. Cooper, states that John was of Scots-Irish descent and ancestors came from England.

Unable to determine who John J. Cooper's parents were. In the Shenandoah Co., VA Tax List for 1829, a Jacob Cooper is listed with 2 white males over 16. Same for 1830 and 1831. In 1832 & 1833 Jacob Cooper is listed with 1wm>16. In 1834 Jacob Cooper is also listed with 1wm>16 plus John J. Cooper is listed with 1wm>16. Could Jacob Cooper be John J. Coper's father?

1834-1843 John J. Cooper listed in the Shenandoah Co., VA Tax List Series 07770, Microfilm Reel 92. There is a Jacob, John & William Cooper listed in 1832. Also in 1832 there are Henry, John, Jacob and Mary( widow of George) Hinkins listed in Wm. Payne's District.

In 1854 in Taylor Co., (W)VA, John J. Cooper gave a deposition along with Amos & Hannah P. Marker and John M. Bayley for Elisha Mahaney vs. Mifflin Mahaney. What is the relationship of these 4 people, if any? Hannah & John Bayley's wife, Isabel were Mahoney's. Mary Hinkins Cooper's brother, George Hinkins was married to a Hannah Marker. (Shen. Co. Chancery Case 1857.03.080) In the depo, John J. Cooper states he left the area in the fall of 1845.

John J. Cooper was listed in Vol 1, page 45, "From the Rhine to the Shenandoah" by Dan Bly as a son of Barbara Dosh & her husband, George Cooper. A revision was made in Vol 2 and John Cooper who married Mary Henkins is not the son of George Cooper, the shoemaker. Could John J. be a grandson of George?

Could John J. have worked for the railroad? 1850 census has his occupation as a farmer. In 1860, John's son, John H. was a conductor for the railroad.
