My grandfather John Santa, changed at ellis island to shanta, came from Mukachevo, not sure of the spelling, near the Carpathen Mts. in Russia between 1912 and 1916. My grandmother came from a nearby village at the same time frame, but they didn't know each other. Her maiden name was Lutza. They meet and married in the pittsburgh area. My father, George Shanta was born in Monesin in the 1920's. I believe they moved before the depression, to Pottstown Pa.
