2. THOMAS JOHN² THURSTON (THOMAS¹) was born Abt. January 13, 1610/11 in Wrentham, Suffolk, England, and died November 01, 1685 in Medfield, Norfolk Co., MA. He married MARGARET BUCK Abt. 1631 in Wrentham, Suffolk, England.

Wrentham, Suffolk County, England is a village on the shore of the North Sea.
       The name Thurston or Thurstan is believed to be of Scandanavian origin and means Thor's Stone. It is found in England as early as 800 A.D. Some Thurstons held important offices such as coiners of money for the king. Thurstan, Abbott of Glastonbury, became the twenty-eight Archbishop of York in 1100 A.D. The Thurstons in America are descended from three Englishmen, Edward, Daniel and John Thurston. The Long Island branch of Thurstons trace their descent from John.
       John Thurston was a carpenter in Wrentham. On May 10, 1637 when he was 36 and his wife Margaret 32, with two sons Thomas and John, they sailed from Yarmouth for America in the Ship Mary Ann and settled in Dedham, Mass., where John was received into the church on June 9, 1640 and his wife on March 28, 1643.
       In order to encourage skilled mechanics to settle in the Amercian Colonies, it was customary at that time to have their passage paid by some individual or the community, which had to be worked out after arrival. John Thurston spent six years working out his passage and became a freeman on February 16, 1643, when a lot was granted to him in Dedham, Mass.
