Youngport. On Friday last, the sloop E. W. Hulse, Capt. John Saunders was capsized by a heavy sea while crossing the bar of Jones Inlet about 7a.m. The captain's brother, Charles Saunders and brother-in-law Joseph Munsell who were on board were drowned. The sloop was small and loaded with clams and oysters which were soon washed out of her and the little craft drifted out to sea. About 10 a.m. the sloop Hamlet of Bayshore, passing by the wreck saw a man on it, went to and removed what was supposed to be a dead man, but after an hour of hard work, he was brought to and the man came to his senses. This was John Saunder, the captain. It seems that when the sloop was capsized, he became tangled in the main sheet and kept himself above water by holding on the rope although terribly bruised. Capt. Smith of the Hamlet was bound for New York, and on arrival, sent Captain Saunders home on the cars. He is now under medical treatment and will recover. Charles Saunders leaves a wife who is sickly and who on receipt of the news became hysterical and refused to believe her husband was drowned until his body was found. The remains were sent to Youngport on Monday. Munsell's body has not been found. The sloop was a total loss and was valued at $500 and was owned by John Saunders and Joseph Munsell.

Notes for J
OHN THURSTON TOOKER:
Worked part time as a wrecker for the Merritt Co. He was late getting to the wreck of the of the circassion due to the birth of James. When he arrived he was put to work on shore unloading cargo from the boat unloading the ship. He probably would have lost his life aboard if he had not been late arriving. -Pg 15 Jan '39 L.I. It was nearer his home in Lawrence than any fo the many other stations at which he served. Captain Will was the first child of my father's second wife and he was named after her father, Wm Buel Albin, who sailed a schooner out of Port Jefferson during the Civil War. His vessel was anchored in the James River during the battle of Harrison's Landing and he had a bird's eye view of the engagement from the masthead of his schooner.
