Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 CARLISLE I was born Bet. 1730 - 1740 in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died Bef. December 06, 1770 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He married ANN IRVING Unknown in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland. She was born Unknown in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died Bef. 1770 in Abbeville, South Carolina.

JAMES CARLISLE I

James Carlile, a farmer in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan in the 1750's, sailed for America in the fall of 1769 with his young family. Pious Presbyterians, James and his wife, Ann Irvine Carlile, and their young children left Belfast aboard the crowded ship Hopewell and arrived in Savannah, GA in December after six weeks at sea.

After waiting several days in the hull of the ship for clearance to leave the harbor, the passengers sailed up the Savannah River to a plantation for immigrants near Queensborough, GA. But when the plantation failed to live up to its advertising, several families, including the Carliles, hired the ship's captain to take them to Charleston. There James and Ann were treated well and granted land at Long Cane in the old Ninety-Six District which later became Abbeville.

The Charleston, S.C. Court of Ordinary recorded the proceedings as follows:

Citation granted to Samuel Paxton and Jane Carlile daughter of James Carlile of Long Canes to Administer the Estate and Effects of James Carlile late of Long Canes, Prince William Parish, Craven County as nearest of kin. To be read in the Parish Church aforesaid and returned certified (by the minister), granted 6th December 1770.

In 1775, a royal grant of 400 acres in the name of James Carlile was signed by William Bull, Esq., Lieutenant Governor, Province of South Carolina. The grant, made five years after James' death, was terms a memorial and apparently intended as a rememberance by his family.

James could have also been a teacher or minister as well as a farmer.

Generation No. 2

2. JAMES2 CARLISLE (JAMES1) was born May 23, 1763 in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died April 09, 1842 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He married MARGARET BOLES October 15, 1783 in Abbeville, South Carolina, daughter of JOHN BOLES and ANN UNKNOWN. She was born June 27, 1762 in South Carolina, and died August 13, 1857 in Abbeville, South Carolina.

JAMES CARLISLE

James Carlile, son of the immigrant, was only six years old when his family came to America. He was born May 23, 1763 in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland. At age 17, he was drafted into the South Carolina militia as a private, and three weeks later fought in what has been called the greatest tactical victory ever won on American soil, the Battle of Cowpens in upper South Carolina. The fighting began Jan 17, 1781 near Spartanburg. James served under his brother, Captain Francis Carlile. Both served under the command of Col. Andrew Pickens.

Around 1790 James built a house of hewn logs just northwest of Lowndesville, SC on land granted to him for his service during the Revolutionary War. The property remains in the family to this day. James and Margaret raised their family, farmed, and lived there for the rest of their lives. The house has been added onto over the years, but the original log house still stands, and the graves of James and Margaret in the field approximately 200 yards behind it have only recently been marked. About 60 people are buried there in the Carlile Family Cemetery including James and Margaret's oldest son, John, and his wife, Frances Tucker. A descendant of John and Frances currently owns the property where the old home and cemetery are located.

MARGARET BOLES

Margaret Boles-Carlisle died at her residence, in the upper part of Abbeville District, South Carolina, about the 13th of August last, Mrs. Margaret Carlisle. The deceased was about ninety-five years of age, and had been a zealous and confident member of the Associated Reformed Church at Little Generostee, under the successive pastorates of Revs. Robert Irwin, Ebenezer E. Pressley, D.D. and James C. Chambers. Her zeal for the Glory of God, in attending the public ordinances of this house, was not perceived to experience any diminuities until utterly incapacitated by the infirmities of old age. How forceably does her case illustrate the scripture truth: "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of corn cometh in the season" Job: vs 26:[Shackelford & related families.FBK.FTW]

Generation No. 4

5. JAMES JOSEPH CARLISLE4 SHACKELFORD (MARGARET A.3 CARLISLE, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born October 31, 1826 in Lowndesville, South Carolina, and died June 25, 1915 in Carroll County, Georgia. He married MARGARET A. FORBES February 06, 1849 in Troup County, Georgia, daughter of JOHN FORBES and AZUBAH MCNEAS. She was born March 25, 1827 in Elbert County, Georgia, and died June 06, 1909 in Carroll County, Georgia.

JAMES JOSEPH CARLISLE SHACKELFORD

At the time of the 1860 census, James had the occupation as farmer but by the time of the 1870 census his occupation had changed from a farmer to that of a tanner. This is most likely a trade he developed as a Private in the 41st Infantry, Company I, in the Confederate Army, where his fellow servicemen knew him by the name of "Joseph Shackelford". According to some family members during the days of the Civil War, the farm of James also served the purpose of making boots for the Confederate Army. Family folklore has it that during the time the Union troops were moving through Carroll County, his family was busy at their trade in the tannery business. James was also a member of the Free-Masons and knowing that the Union Officers had a great deal of respect for this organization, he had instructed that the emblem of the Free-Masons be placed at the entrance to his farm. As the Union Troops passed through they saw the emblem which had been placed at the farm's entrance and out of the respect that James had believed they would show, by-passed his farm, never knowing that he was operating a boot factory for the Confederate Army.

The above story may or may not be true, as mentioned; it is only family folklore. But what is not folklore is the historical fact that James Carlisle Shackelford did indeed serve in the Confederate Army. He enlisted on March 04, 1862 in Heard County, Georgia as Private Joseph Shackelford and served in Company 1 of the Georgia 41st Infantry, Stovall's Brigade, under the command of Brig. General Marcellus A. Stovall. This unit, as well as several others, was placed under the command of Major General Carter L. Stevenson, Stevenson's Division. This Brigade was involved in several campaigns, including the Atlanta and Tennessee Valley Campaigns. Stovall's Brigade fought at the Battle of Franklin and moved on to the Battle of Nashville where the Union Army captured Private James (Joseph) Carlisle Shackelford on December 14, 1864. He was held as prisoner of war at the infamous Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois until his release on June 20, 1865, at which time he returned home to his family in Carrollton, Georgia.

During the Atlanta Campaign, General Stevenson's Division came under the Command of General John Bell Hood, the previous commander being General Joseph Johnston. Johnston seemed to put more emphasis on the loss of real estate and less emphasis on the loss of his men, believing that real estate could be retaken and that a soldiers life could not. General Hood had the reverse idea, putting the loss of his men of less of importance than the real estate. His battle plans were to attack and keep attacking regardless of the cost of life. Even with this errant disregard of the life of a soldier, Jefferson Davis as Commander of the Army of Tennessee appointed General Hood on July 17, 1864. This move would eventually prove to be a disaster for the Confederate Army. At the Battle of Kolb's Farm near Kennesaw the Confederate losses were in excess of 1,000 men, with Stevenson's Division, the Division that Pvt. Shackelford was a member of, losing 870 men. In the words of General Johnston concerning General Hood and the Battle of Kolb's Farm. "Hood had his moment of glory and reclaimed his reputation as an aggressive commander, but at a cost the Confederacy could ill afford."

After the stinging loss that came from the fall of Atlanta, General Hood moved his men north to the Battle of Allatoona Pass. The mission of re-capturing Allatoona Pass fell upon General Samuel French who referred to it as "a needless effusion of blood." At the loss of many men, the repeated assaults by the Rebel forces proved fruitless. From here, General Hood headed north into Tennessee, while General Sherman headed south. Unfortunately for the men under the command of General Hood, Sherman had left more than enough forces behind. General Hood's men first met the Union forces at Franklin on the way to Nashville on November 30, 1864. The ensuing battle at Franklin amassed a total of over 6,300 casualties for the Confederate Army. In a last desperate attempt to force General Sherman's army out of Georgia and after suffering terrible losses at Franklin, General Hood continued on toward Nashville. After suffering thousands of more casualties, General Hood and the Confederate army was decimated and ceased to exist as a fighting unit. General Hood retreated to Tupelo, Mississippi while many of his men, including Private James (Joseph) Carlisle Shackelford, were taken prisoner. Private Shackelford would serve out the remainder of the war at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois.

From February 30, 1862 to July 05, 1865, Camp Douglas hosted many thousands of Confederate prisoners of war in what had become known as the "North's Andersonville." By the end of the war, 4,275 confederates died, many from starvation, others froze to death being deprived of the necessary blankets to keep them warm. Their deaths and suffering were the shame of a vengeful Union. The sacrifice that these men endured has been largely forgotten, being only remembered by one monument erected by Southern veterans at Oak Wood Cemetery. Private James Shackelford was released on June 20, 1865, only two weeks before the camp was closed, at which time he returned to his wife Margaret and their four children in Carrollton, Georgia.[Shackelford & related families.FBK.FTW]

"The Descendants of John Shackelford" by Donnie Shackleford

Generation #14

YOUNG LEE SHACKELFORD FAMILY

Young Lee Shackelford was the third child and the oldest son of John Harlin Shackelford and Jerusha Carrie Bonner. He was born January 23, 1882 in Carroll County, Georgia. Of the four children of John and Jerusha, Young Lee was the only one to leave the area that his ancestors had settled many years earlier. Young Lee's father passed away one month before his tenth birthday. This led to hard times for Young. His mother, two older sisters and his younger brother, John Gay Shackelford, who was only six years of age, and Young Lee were left to take care of the farm John Harlin Shackelford had left behind. Being the oldest son, the chores of the farm would become one of his primary responsibilities.

Soon after the turn of the century, Young's mother, Jerusha, married Sebron W. Millican. This was the second marriage for Sebron. According to the 1880 census report for Carroll County, Georgia, he was married to Mary F. , last name unknown, with four children. What became of his first wife and children is unknown.

Young Lee Shackelford and Sebron Millican had extreme difficulty in their relationship. Any reason for these misgivings is unknown.

One day while working in the fields, Young Lee confronted Sebron and a violent argument ensued. This quickly evolved into a fight. Young Lee became very agitated and struck Sebron with a garden hoe, rendering him unconscious.

Thinking that he had killed him, Young became frightened and ran away. Sebron quickly recovered and filed no charges. Jerusha, desperate to find her son, hired detectives to locate him. He was found several years later in Crenshaw County, Alabama, married and a father. Young Lee made two trips back to Georgia to see his mother, but only after he had learned of the death of Sebron. Jerusha made one trip to Alabama to see her son. After this last visit, they never saw each other again.

Donnie Shackleford 1999

Young Lee Shackleford and Mary Alice Nichols-Shackelford

Young Lee Shackelford came to Alabama in the early 1900s after a violent encounter with his stepfather, Sebron Millican. He became associated with the Nichols family of MT. Ida, Alabama, when he was employed to work in a logging camp. The Nichols family was noted for their timber holdings. Through this association, he met Mary Alice Nichols, daughter of George Marion and Mary Engram-Nichols. They were married December 22, 1905.

Young Lee and Mary Alice relocated in Petrey, Alabama, in the north-eastern section of Crenshaw County. Young bought a farm and started to raise a family with Mary. Seven children were born over the next several years, but only two children survived infancy. During this period a devastating tornado struck and destroyed considerable of Young's property. Due to overwhelming hardships, Young lost his farm in 1915. He returned to the logging camps and brought his family with him. Two more children were born to Mary Alice but they too, died in infancy. In the summer of 1926, Young Lee became ill at work and was taken by train to Montgomery, Alabama, sixty miles away. There he was rushed into surgery for a ruptured appendix. He never fully recovered and died at home September 23, 1926.

After her husband's death, Mary Alice, with her two surviving children, Zeddie and Ivera, moved to Carroll County, Georgia. They moved in with Young's mother, Jerusha Carrie Bonner-Shackelford. They attempted to help Jerusha with the farm but in 1929, they returned to Crenshaw County, Alabama. Zeddie moved away from home in 1930 when he was married. Ivera married in 1935 to Clarence Chance but Mary stayed with them until her death in 1953. She died in a diabetic coma. [Nichols.FTW]

Though he spent his life in the fields of West Georgia, James had a great passion for the guitar and country music and became quite an accomplished musician. Later in life and due to poor health James lost his ability to play music. However, he passed his knowledge of music down to his daughters who became quite popular in the 1940s.

However, the ship steamed under it's own power back to San Francisco for repairs. Ninety miles from shore James was making repairs on the upper deck from where he fell, dying instantly.

Due to his close proximity to shore his body was not buried at sea but flown home instead for burial.

RHODA & NELLIE STOREY

By: Donnie Shackleford

Rhoda and Nellie Story, through the teachings of their father and various home study courses, continued to learn and enhance their musical talents, not just learning the guitar, but learning to master other musical instruments, including the banjo, mandolin, bass and piano. Later they would form a country music group known as "Charlie Cole and the Southern Kinfolks". During and shortly after World War II, Nellie and Rhoda toured the Southeast playing for injured veterans who were returning home from the war. Both seemed to have a great deal of affection for the men who dedicated so unselfishly their well-being to the defense of their country, an obvious reflection to the memory of their brother, James Cliff Story. Between the years of 1947-1948, Nellie and Rhoda had their own Radio Program, broadcast from WLBB Radio, now WBRT in Carrollton, Georgia.

Rhoda has since passed away but Nellie is still living in Carrollton. Arthritis has deformed her hands and she is no longer capable of making music. Neither ever married.

24. IRY ZEDDIE7 SHACKLEFORD (YOUNG LEE6 SHACKELFORD, JOHN HARLIN5, JAMES JOSEPH CARLISLE4, MARGARET A.3 CARLISLE, JAMES2, JAMES1)1 was born October 08, 1907 in Crenshaw County, Alabama1, and died December 04, 1988 in Luverne Hospital, Luverne, Crenshaw County, Alabama. He married EVA NAOMI DEAN December 23, 1930 in Brantley, Crenshaw County, Alabama at the home of Jewell Tisdale., daughter of ROBERT DEAN and AMANDA HARVILLE. She was born October 12, 1916 in Brantley, Crenshaw County, Alabama1.

IRY ZEDDIE SHACKLEFORD

Zeddie was named in honor of Zaddock Bonner, who discovered gold in Carroll County, Georgia in the early 1800s. Zaddock was the grandfather of Jerusha Carrie Bonner-Shackelford, who was the grandmother of Zeddie.

Zeddie's father, Young Lee Shackelford, died when he was 19. This left him in charge of his families welfare, so he decided to take the family from Alabama to the home of grandmother, Jerusha, in Carroll County, Georgia. While there, he attempted farming but due to hardships of "The Great Depression of 1929" and the hard rocky soil, his efforts at farming in Georgia failed. Against the wishes of his grandmother, and with the blessings of his mother, Mary Alice Nichols-Shackelford, Zeddie moved the family back to Crenshaw County,

Alabama. According to family memory, Mary Alice was never fond of Georgia and resented being so far from home and her Alabama relatives. They returned to Alabama in late 1929. Zeddie never again saw his grandmother alive and did not return to Georgia until 1948 for the reading of his grandmother's will. He received ten dollars.

Life was very hard on Zeddie when he returned to Alabama. When work was available it was either in the swamps cutting Dogwood, in the fields harvesting peanuts and cotton, or working in the saw mills. At best, his earning never surpassed fifty cents a day.

The following year, 1930, he met Eva Naomi Dean at a "Peanut Shelling" in the Spring Hill Community near Brantley, Alabama. Though she was only 14 at the time, they soon married. The first few years of marriage was a struggle to make ends meet. However; Zeddie again took up farming, doing so successfully, raising peanuts, corn, and cotton. During World War II, Zeddie often worked German POWs in his fields. He was amazed at their efficiency, not leaving a single peanut on the vine, and even picking stray plants that grew along the roadside.

According to family lore, it was during the years of farming that his spelling of Shackelford was changed to Shackleford. It is alleged that a government farm agent misspelled his name on some quota form. due to his misfortunes during the depression, several of his friends suggested that he not make notice of it because it could interfere with his allotment payment. So from that moment on, his branch of the family has spelled their last name with the "le" instead of the "el".

Zeddie gave up farming in 1945 and moved to Brantley, where he was employed by the city. He now had two children, a son and daughter. He founded the City Water and Maintenance Departments and for many years worked as the manager of those departments. During this period he also gave his time as a volunteer fireman and auxiliary police officer. He was active in many community activities as well as a charter member of "Woodsmen of The world".

By 1952, Zeddie and Naomi had successfully raised a family. His son was in the United States Air Force serving in Korea and they had a seventeen year old daughter at home. Zeddie was 44 and Naomi was 35. One would think it would be time to sit down and relax for awhile. On April 29th of that ear, Naomi gave birth to triplets, two boys and a girl. However, as fate would have it, three years later disaster struck. While working on the water lines in Brantley, Zeddie witnessed a head on collision between a passenger bus and a car. Driving the car was his son. He was killed instantly. Zeddie was devastated and Naomi had a nervous breakdown, not even being able to attend her son's funeral. The only cure for such pain was time.

Again, Zeddie and Naomi successfully raised another family. Zeddie continued working with the city of Brantley until the mid 1960s when he was hired as the Supervisor of The Crenshaw County School Maintenance Department. He semi-retired in 1972 and again worked part time with the city of Brantley and also ran a plumbing business.

In December 1980, Zeddie and Naomi celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. However; with failing health and years of hard work behind him, Zeddie called it quits and retired completely. On June 23, 1988, during the funeral of his son-in-law, Zeddie suffered a stroke and was taken to the Crenshaw County Hospital in Luverne, Alabama. Over a period of several months he had several more strokes that left him totally invalid. He died in Crenshaw County Hospital in December of that year.

As the cliche goes, "Behind every good man stands a good woman", this has never been any truer than it was with Naomi. Through richer or poorer, better or worse, she was very bound to her marriage vows. She has successfully fought a battle with colon cancer. Though suffering from bad eyesight, she is still energetic and acutely aware of her surrounding, still raising a garden and cutting her own grass. She also does quilting as a hobby, not letting her sight bother her too much. She still manages to produce some remarkable works of art.

i. MARION YOUNG8 SHACKLEFORD1, b. November 13, 1931, Crenshaw County, Alabama1; d. April 19, 1955, Brantley, Alabama.

MARION YOUNG SHACKLEFORD

Marion, known as "Billy", was born and raised in Brantley, Alabama attending school there. He left school and went to work at a young age for the City of Brantley. While working with the town he was bitten in the forehead by a cotton mouth snake while clearing brush. This caused him seizures for many years. However, it did not prevent his entering into military service.

Billy joined the Alabama National Guard in 1949. By 1951 he had attained the rank of staff sergeant and was serving with the 711th AAA Gun BN, Battery C. While on summer camp at Camp Stewart, Georgia in 1951, his unit was mobilized and sent to the Pacific during the Korean War. He was stationed at Okinawa. He returned home in 1952 and joined the United States Air Force in 1953. He was again sent to the Pacific, serving at Clarke Air Force Base in the Philippines until early 1955. He ran a refueling group while there and worked refueling F-86 Sabres.

Billy was scheduled to return home in March 1955. However, in haste to leave, he forgot his travel orders. He was refused boarding on a MATS R6-D transport aircraft leaving Hickam field in Hawaii en route to Travis AFB, California. Three and one-half hours out the aircraft developed trouble and turned back to Hickam. The plane crashed into the Wai'anae Mountains near Lualualei Naval Ammunition Depot, killing all 66 aboard. Billy made it home around the first of April.

He was to be stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in April 1955. While returning to Brantley from Luverne, Alabama on April 19, 1955, he was involved in a head on collision with a Trailways Bus, killing him instantly. His father, Zeddie Shackleford, was working on a water main that was being laid across the road when the accident occurred and witnessed the event. He was the first one to the car after the crash.

She married CLARENCE EVERT CHANCE September 16, 1935 in Crenshaw County, Alabama1, son of UNKNOWN CHANCE and LILLIE Bowden. He was born February 12, 1912 in Crenshaw County, Alabama1, and died April 14, 1984 in Brantley, Alabama.

CLARENCE EVERT CHANCE AND IVERA SHACKELFORD-CHANCE

Ivera was the only surviving daughter of Young Lee Shackelford and Mary Alice Nichols. When her father died in 1926, she went with he brother, Zeddie, and her mother to try and make a living in Carroll County, Georgia. While there, they lived with her grandmother, Jerusha Carrie Bonner-Shackelford. According to family stories, Ivera never got along very well with Jerusha. Just exactly why, no one knows. It is known that Mary Alice was never really happy in Georgia and wanted to return home to her relatives in Alabama. This could have led to some ill feelings between them.

Ivera had a pet squirrel that Jerusha would not let her keep so Jerusha freed it to go it's way. Ivera was enraged. Jerusha had a cherished flower on her porch. Everyday Ivera would pull a limb or pinch it in a way that caused it to slowly die.

Jerusha never knew what really happened. She tried in vain to save her flower.

Ivera never forgot the squirrel incident.

Against the wishes of Jerusha, Ivera, Zeddie, and her mother returned to Alabama in late 1929. After their return, Zeddie soon married and moved out of the home that he shared with his mother and Ivera. This left Mary and Ivera living alone until 1935 when Ivera married Clarence E. Chance. Mary Alice lived with Clarence and Ivera until her death in 1953.

During World War II, Clarence, Ivera, and Mary moved to Mobile, Alabama, where Clarence worked as a ship's welder building "Liberty Ships". when the war ended in 1945, they returned to Crenshaw County, Alabama. They lived in a home owned by Andrew Byrd Sasser and Benonia Nichols-Sasser. During this period Clarence worked in the logging business on land that had been owned by Joel Lafayette Nichols. They lived there until the early sixties when Clarence and Ivera moved to Brantley, Alabama. Clarence found employment with the town of Brantley and worked for many years until his retirement in the late seventies. On Saturday morning, July 14, 1984, Clarence was tilling his garden for planting. He had a massive heart attack and died on the spot where he fell.

Clarence had a bad heart and was warned by his doctors not to exert himself.

Ivera lived alone for the rest of her life in Brantley. In the summer of 1988 she became very ill and was rushed to Crenshaw County Hospital in Luverne, Alabama. She was rushed into surgery to have colon cancer removed, but it had spread too far. She died within a week four rooms down from where her brother Zeddie was in the hospital due to a stroke. He died five months later.

In 1981, Kenny left American Sterilizer and worked with the Air force as a civilian photographer at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Alabama. He became chief photographer and was assigned VIP duty. Part of his assignments was being the personal photographer to President Gerald Ford for two days while he was visiting Maxwell, as well as the head photographer for the "Gathering of Eagles" for three years which included such aviation heros as Jimmy Doolittle, Paul Tibbetts, and Chuck Yeager. When his wife Cindy took a job in Atlanta in 1985, Kenny became a newspaper photographer in Atlanta where he worked the Society pages. During this period he covered President Reagan on one of his Atlanta trips. Kenny also joined the Naval Reserve in 1985 and was assigned to 165th NAS Atlanta where he worked as a photographer. He received an Honorable Discharge after his two year enlistment was up.

In January 1991 Kenny and his family moved to Austin, Texas, where they lived for a year after Cindy was transferred. While there he worked for Holland Photo. At the end of that year they moved back to Woodstock, Georgia. Kenny gave up his photo career in 1992 and returned to pneumatics and hydraulics. He has worked for several years with Applied Industrial Technologies. They were recently acquired by "Offshore-Inland Services" from Mobile, Alabama.

After the death of his son Christopher in July 200, Kenny has became a crusader against drunk driving and has became President of S.T.O.P., Inc. (Save The Other Person, Stop Drunk Driving)

ii. CHRISTOPHER LANE (CHRIS) SHACKLEFORD, b. July 02, 1981, Baptist Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama; d. July 29, 2000, Marietta, Georgia.

CHRISTOPHER LANE (CHRIS) SHACKLEFORD

Christopher was a graduate of Woodstock High School in Woodstock, Georgia and attending Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia where he was majoring in Film. He was an aspiring young actor with ambitions for the movies. Chris had performed in several plays and had been an active member of the Atlanta Workshop Players and performed with the Georgia Renaissance Festival. He was working on a film for an independent producer in Los Angeles, California.

On July 29, 2000, after 1:00a.m, my wonderful son died in Marietta, Georgia. He, along with three friends were on their way to watch movies at a friend's home when a drunk driver crossed the center line and smashed into my son's car. Chris, 19, died instantly, his friend Julieanne Pascoe, 18, died within a few minutes. Another passenger and close friend to my family, Miechelle "Kelli" Bourgeois, 19, died the following Wednesday in Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. All three of these wonderful people are buried beside each other at Rolling Hills Gardens Cemetery in Acworth, Georgia. Mathew Hunt, 24, future husband of Keli was injured very badly and is in a rehabilitation hospital where he faces many months, if not years, of extensive therapy.

The driver of the car that had hit my son was 20 and had been drinking underage in a local bar. He got into a fight in the bar and was kicked out and set loose on the road in a drunken rage. Before he got out of the parking lot he hit several cars and ran over a pedestrian, seriously injuring him. This individual had an expired green card, spoke no English, and had been arrested for drunken driving previously.

We live in a flawed society that will allow these type of people to be on the road to kill and mame our loved ones. In the name of Chris, Kelli, and Julie, my wife Cindy and I, along with the other parents and friends, have made it our mission to prevent this sort of stupidity from happening again, though sadly, it will. Please visit my Home Page and click on the Memorial to Chris. Go to STOP. Inc. and see what you can do to help.

In honor to my Beloved Son, Chris

I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow. Then called I upon the name of the Lord; O Lord, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted: I said in my haste, All men are liars. What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. O Lord, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. In the courts of the Lord's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the Lord.

Chris L. Shackleford died at 1:15am, Saturday, July 29, 2000, in a car accident caused by a drunk driver on Sandtown Road in Cobb County, which is just northwest of Atlanta, Georgia. He was 19 years old. Julieanne Pascoe, 18, a friend of Chris', also died shortly after the accident in a local hospital.

Matthew Hunt, 24, and Michelle "Kelli" Bourgeois, 19, were both severely injured.

Kelli died late Wednesday night from injuries sustained in the accident. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran this article about Kelli, Matt, and some more details on the accident, on Thursday morning.

Tests found that the drunk driver, who is 20 years old, had a blood-alcohol level of .178 just after the crash, which is more than double the legal limit in Georgia (.08). He did not have a valid drivers license or insurance. The AJC printed this on Wednesday, August 2nd. He has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide, DUI, assault, and several other charges, which are detailed in this article published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. On August 25, the Cobb County police department charged a waitress that served the drunk driver.

Chris was a friend of many, and was a very active member of the online community, in many different chat systems and message boards. Since many of us first met Chris online, we felt that an online tribute was needed. This site was named 'filmboy18.com' in honor of one of the nicknames that Chris used in the chat rooms, because of his love for film and movies. Chris was a freshman at Georgia State University, majoring in film studies. He was also a very talented writer, and enjoyed sharing his works with others.

During a typical weekend, an average of one teenager dies each hour in a car crash in the United States. Nearly fifty percent of those crashes involved alcohol (NHTSA, 1999). That's one every two hours. This has to stop. We can make a difference, if we just speak out. If you do drink, make sure you have a designated driver, or take a taxi. If one of your friends is about to drive after drinking, take his or her keys. Hide them. Do anything to keep him or her out of that car. Another way you can help is by supporting Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. You can donate to the Georgia Chapter online.

VIGIL REMEMBERS THREE TEENS

YOLANDA RODRIGUEZ - STAFF

Monday, October 30, 2000

It's been three months since a drunken driving accident in Marietta took the lives of three teenagers. But the passage of days and weeks has not healed the pain for those who lit candles during a vigil Sunday night, vowing to stop drunken drivers. "I just miss having her around," said Dawn Pascoe, mother of Julieanne Pascoe, 18, one of the teens who died July 29 on Sandtown Road.

The vigil was held in the parking lot of the Masonic lodge. It was just a few steps from the scene where Sergio Montelongo-Sanchez, who had been thrown out of the Dos Naciones bar for fighting, allegedly crashed his Lincoln Continental into a Honda Civic, killing Pascoe and Christopher Shackleford, 19, the driver. A third teenager Miechelle "Kelli" Bourgeois, 19, died a few days later. Montelongo-Sanchez was charged with their deaths. He is being held in the Cobb County jail.

The accident spurred the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in Georgia to begin deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants who are caught driving drunk. The policy has affected mostly Mexicans and Central Americans in Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. So far, proceedings against 64 people have been started.

In their grief over the teens' deaths, their friends started an organization, STOP Drunk Driving (Save The Other Person), in an effort to get people to behave responsibly when it comes to consuming alcohol. During the vigil, they handed out copies of a resolution asking people to stop DUIs before they happen. The pledge can also be made online at the group's Web site.

Although their children were killed by a Hispanic man, the families stressed that their efforts were not meant to single out any ethnic group. "We need to fix the problem," said Deborah Dahlmann, Bourgeois' mother, said before the vigil. "We don't need to throw blame around . . . I want to go into Hispanic establishments and I want them to be able to say, 'We don't condone what happened, either.' "

Cindy Shackleford, Christopher's mother, said the group faces a language barrier because none of the members speaks Spanish. So far the resolution is available only in English but they hope to get it translated, she said.

DRIVER INDICTED IN THREE DEATHS

A Cobb County grand jury has indicted a driver on three counts of vehicular homicide in an accident that killed three teenagers on Sandtown Road. According to prosecutors, Sergio Montelongo-Sanchez was driving drunk after being thrown out of the Dos Naciones bar in Marietta on July 29. He allegedly hit and injured a pedestrian in the bar's parking lot before speeding away. He then crashed his southbound car into a northbound Honda Civic. Three teenagers died after the crash.

The 22-count indictment was presented Thursday to Superior Court Judge Watson White. District Attorney Pat Head said the charges also include DUI, serious injury by vehicle and aggravated assault. No court date has been set for an arraignment. Montelongo-Sanchez is being held in the Cobb County Jail.

The waitress accused of serving alcohol to Montelongo-Sanchez, who was 20 at the time of the accident, has asked for a trial. Leydi Mendoza faces a misdemeanor charge of serving alcohol to an underage person. Her lawyer, William M. Clark, said a nonjury trial has been set for Dec. 13.

INS STARTS DEPORTING ILLEGALS IN DUI CASES

Tough policy by local office draws criticism from some as unfair and insensitive.

Craig Schneider - Staff

Sunday, October 29, 2000

Should an illegal immigrant who drives drunk be treated any differently than a U.S. citizen caught for DUI?

The Immigration and Naturalization Service in Atlanta now says yes --- and it has started deportation proceedings against 64 illegal immigrants caught driving drunk.

But advocates for immigrants in metro Atlanta think that's unfair.

The deportations began this summer, after Bart Szafnicki, an INS assistant district director, read about three teenagers killed by an alleged drunken driver. Szafnicki thought about his own three teens, and when he learned the suspect was an illegal immigrant, he pressed for a DUI crackdown that touched off the deportation proceedings, mainly affecting Mexicans and Central Americans in Cobb, Gwinnett and DeKalb counties. "I thought about how I would feel if it was my child, " said Szafnicki, who lives in Gwinnett County. "Anyone who is arrested for DUI who is an illegal alien needs to go home." Why treat immigrants differently on DUI? "The native-born population in the U.S. has largely recognized the problem with DUI," Szafnicki said. "But with the new influx of immigrants, I just don't think the word has filtered down."

Teodoro Maus, Mexico's consul general in Atlanta, criticized the deportations as overly punitive for a population of mainly law-abiding and productive people. Though many are here illegally, they are unofficially allowed to stay because their labor helps the local economy. Immigrants are adjusting to different cultures and attitudes about drinking, Maus said, and many are simply unaware of the seriousness of DUI. Many of the immigrants in metro Atlanta are young men working long hours in the construction trade. "They are afraid of going out because they might get caught" as illegal, Maus said. "So they go and get drunk." When they're caught driving, they should be punished, Maus said, "but also with a very strong educational element" --- and not with deportation.

The INS began the deportations after Sergio Montelongo-Sanchez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was charged with driving drunk and crashing into a car, killing three teens in Marietta. He is in jail awaiting a grand jury appearance.

The INS had stepped up deportations of illegal immigrants charged with crimes, but DUIs were a low priority until the Marietta tragedy.

Now it's impacting illegal immigrants like Montelongo-Sanchez and Anibal Cisneros-Gomez. Gomez, 34, was charged with DUI in Gwinnett on Aug. 25. He also gave a false identity to an officer and tried to flee, Szafnicki said. He was convicted five days later and deported in September. "Anyone here illegally should be removed," Cobb Sheriff Bill Hutson said, applauding the deportation effort. "But I agree with the higher priority put toward those endangering the public by driving under the influence."

Montelongo Gets Maximum Sentence

Montolongo's Mother Cries
A Cobb County judge has ruled that illegal immigrant Sergio Montelongo-Sanchez will spend the next 45 years of his life in prison.
Montolongo was found guilty of killing three teens in a crash last July. He admitted he was drunk when the accident took place.
Before he heard his sentence, Montelongo took the stand. A translator looked at faces in the courtroom as the illegal immigrant tearfully apologized for his crimes.

"I am very sorry, from the bottom of my heart. It was my mistake," he said on the witness stand.

Montelongo's mother also testified in the case. Like her son, she used a translator when she asked the court in Spanish, to have leniency on her son.
The family and friends of the victims begged for just the opposite sentence. One by one they took the stand, offered emotional testimony and asked the judge to give Montelongo the maximum sentence allowed by Georgia law.
One of the victim's sisters testified that nothing will replace her loss.

"I will never hear my sister's voice again. I will never see her. I will never hug her," Jessica Pascoe said.
The only survivor from the car Montelongo crashed into last July told the court he walked with a limp because his body was covered in scars. Twenty-five-year-old Mathew Hunt also wanted Montelongo to spend the next 45 years in prison.
Hunt and the family members of Montelongo's dead victims got their wish.
Montelongo will serve a 45 year sentence for driving drunk and killing three Atlanta teens in a crash. Two of the teens died when the crash happened. The third lived a while before dying in a hospital.
The Montelongo case affected all illegal immigrants in the Atlanta area.
Since Montelongo's arrest, the INS tries to deport any illegal immigrant caught driving while drunk on American roadways.

A STORY BY CHRIS SHACKLEFORD Christmas 1999

Rockwell Couldn’t Do Better

As I was sitting on my back porch smoking a cigarette last Christmas Eve, something incredible grabbed my attention. My neighbors who lived in a two-million-dollar mansion and my other neighbors who lived in an old, shabby trailer were celebrating with the same amount of joy. They were not celebrating together, but I could see that both families were equally happy. This completely baffled my mind. I could not comprehend how the families could be so different throughout the year and then be so similar during the holidays. I looked closer.

In the mansion, a Christmas tree reached almost all the way up to the Cathedral ceiling of the cavernous living room. Gathered around it were columns of presents with a glorious variety of wrapping paper, children anxiously waiting to tear into the gifts, and their proud parents looking on with all the love proud parents should have. Warm smiles appeared on every face as an older woman came into the room with a tray full of cocoa, eggnog, and various cookies.

Outside there were two elderly gentlemen bundled up in leather, sharing old memories while smoking their pipes. Children, older than the ones around the Christmas tree, were chasing the family dog back and forth in a game of tag. These people were not at all bothered by the fact that it was below freezing outside; they were enjoying life.

The thousands of white Christmas lights against the night sky seemed to frame the family and mansion as if it were a portrait. This was a perfect picture of a traditional

American Christmas; Norman Rockwell couldn’t have painted it better. A blind man would have seen the joy on their faces.

My attention drifted from the mansion when I heard laugher coming from the center room of the trailer. In this room children and adults were huddled around a small, plastic tree along with a few presents that had been wrapped-up with used newspapers. The children looked anxious to jump into the gifts as the parents looked upon them with pride and contentment. A table had been set up in the corner with bottles of Coca-Cola, a plate of finger sandwiches, and various cookies, but had since been emptied by large appetites.

A cloud of cigarette smoke was hovering over the trailer outside where several men were gathered around talking about the surprising Atlanta Falcons. Across the yard two young teenagers were throwing a football back and forth pretending to be members of the Falcons. Every few minutes one of the smokers would cheer for the teenagers. The fact that it was below freezing didn’t bother them; they were enjoying life.

The stars in the sky were the only decoration they had besides the small, artificial tree, but that didn’t seem to phase them. They were having their traditional Christmas. The joy they were having even brought a smile to my face.

After watching these families for about an hour, I came to the conclusion that the only real difference was the money. They both had loving families, they both celebrated Christmas, and they both were my neighbors. All I had to do was look a little closer to understand how they could have the same joy. I realized that joy is not based on money, but based on love. I then went inside to be with my family.

MICHAEL GREG MUSICK

Greg, admired by all who knew him, left home for college shortly after high school and attened the University of Alabama. While in college he meet Melanie Odom, a daughter of L.M. and Corolyn Odom of Bessemer, Alabama, who was also attending the University of Alabama. It was here that Greg and Melanie's Southern storybook romance began. They both met at the Baptist Student Union and their first date fell on Valentine's Day in 1986. Greg and Melanie married in Bessemer on February 27, 1988. After college they returned to Greg's home in Newnan, Georgia where Greg served as youth minister. Greg had at once considered ministry as a career but later decided to pursue a career in sportscasting. He had worked for over two years as a sales rep for a local car company to save enough money to go back to school.

On April 24, 1990, fate would change the plans of the lifes of Geg and Melanie Musick. On this fateful Tuesday afternoon, Greg was having lunch with a former college buddy at a the Perimeter Mall in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. On the day before James Calvin Brady was released from a local mental hospital, having been admitted for claiming there was a mechanical divice in his body ordering him to kill white people. He was diagnosed as homicidal but the authorities still ordered his release. James Calvin Brady left the hospital and then preceded to a Duluth pawn shop where he bought a gun without proper ID. He then walked into the Perimeter Mall and started firing his gun. When the shooting stopped, four had been shot, two in critical condition and Greg was killed instantly.

Greg's fueneral was held the following Friday at the First Baptist Church of Newnan, Coweta, County, Georgia, officiated by the Reverand Gene Tyre. The funeral was attended by the family and over two hundred of Greg's friends. During the funeral the pastor had these words, "I would not be true to my calling if I did not stand here today and call for people to create and enforce laws to keep guns from the mentally ill." This line from their pastor was a call that Greg's wife Melanie took as her calling.

The day Greg was buried, Melanie placed a call to the Mayor's office in Atlanta urging him for a prompt push for a 15 day waiting period on handgun purchases, informing him of her desire to do anything possible to help. Within a week Melanie was thrust into the spotlight of press conferences and congressional hearings. During this time she met a lady by the name of Sarah, whose husband had also been gunned down in a hail of gunfire. Sarah's husband had been critically injured and was left partially paralized. For the next year, she channeled her pain into political activism, telling all who would listen of the need for the control of handguns. In the wake of the shooting, Melanie achieved the commissioners approval of a 15 day waiting period on handgun purchases. Melanie and her new found friends, Sarah and her husband James took their fight to Washington, DC., and through their had combined work on and in the memory of Michael Greg Musick, on November 30, 1993, they stood by the side of President William Jefferson Clinton at the signing of the "Brady Gun Control Bill", named after Melanie's newfound friends, Sarah and James Brady. The later being wounded during the attempted assisantion of President Ronald Reagan.

"Melanie Musick is the inspiration who helped push the US Senate passage Thursday of a compromise of the Brady Bill, one that not only mandates a five business day waiting period, but also requires an instant background checks on handgun purchases. In Washington, she was befriended by Sarah and James Brady, President Reagan's press secretary who was gunned down in 1981, when Melanie was just 14. They are incredibly strong people."
