Notes for A
LVIN WELLMAKER:
Alvin Wellmaker, born in Lincoln County, Georgia, in 1853, married Elizabeth Jones in 1874. This couple settled in the Loco community in Lincoln County, Georgia, where all five of their children were born.
Alvin and his family were quite close to his sister Susan Elizabeth Wellmaker who married Joel Lafayette Nichols of Wilkes County, Georgia, and later moved to Pike County, Alabama. (Later to become Crenshaw County) Susan and her family had left Georgia after her parents expressed some ill feelings about Joel to her.
Contact between Susan and her Georgia family wasn't made for several years after their move. However, once it was established again, Alvin and members of his family became frequent visitors to Susan's Alabama home. Catherine, one of Arvin's daughters, died while visiting. Her body was returned to Georgia.
Alvin died in 1930, four years after the death of his wife. He and Elizabeth are buried in the Hephzibah Church Cemetery in Lincoln County, Georgia.

Elizabeth Jones Connection

Elizabeth Betty Jones and Alvin Wellmaker were first cousins. Elizabeth's parents were John W. Jones and Susannah Catherine Crook. Susannah was sister to Margaret Peggy Crook who married Elias Wellmaker. Elias and Margaret were the parents of Alvin Wellmaker.

Notes for J
OHN H. WELLMAKER III:
John served with the Georgia Volunteers, enlisting as Private October 08, 1861. He was assigned duty with the 61st Regiment, Company G, known as "Wilkes Guards." John enlisted with a cousin, William Lawernce Wellmaker, son of Elias and Margaret Crook Wellmaker. William died in battle at Cold Harbor, Virginia in 1862. John died in a Confederate Hospital in Winchester, Virginia, in January or February, 1864. The cause of his death is unknown. I would assume it was war related.

FROM THE RESEARCH OF THOMAS H. COMPTON, 1978

In the Census of Pike County, Georgia, dated 9 August 1860 we find John H. Wellmaker listed as 23 years old. I admit that he would have had to marry young, about 18, to have had a child 15 years old in 1870; however, I believe such is the case, and we must remember that Cesus data is unreliable.

In the cemetery at Clark's Station Baptist Church, Wilkes County. Georgia, we find the graves of Martha E. Wellmaker, 1833 - 1909, and Luther Wellmaker, 1855 -1920. When these dates are compared to the 1870 Census, Luther fits perfectly and Martha is off two to three years.
