Notes for C
HARITY RIGGAN:
Charity was the first child born to Jacob and Elizabeth, January 31, 1819 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Charity's mother died when she was twenty years old. Charity was then needed in the Riggan home to help care for her grandparents, Joel and Nancy, and her younger brothers and sisters, ages four to sixteen. This task probably delayed her marriage. She married Jesse Albertson on October 24, 1846 in Davidson County, North Carolina. Charity's younger brother, Joel, was the bondsman for the wedding. It is believed that Jesse Albertson had previously been married. He already had two children, Richard, born in 1838, and Martha, born in 1843.

Charity and Jesse had five children: Jacob, born in 1849, Joel, born in 1851, Nancy, born in 1854, and John and James, born in 1858. The last two children may have been twins. A review of wedding bonds indicates the following marriages involving Charity's children. Jacob married Amanda Steveson on December 11, 1876. Joel married Susan C. Runnion on November 29, 1883. John married Melissa King on December 22, 1878.

Charity and Jesse came to Indiana in 1852 and settled in Gregg Township of Morgan County. Jesse's mother, Mary Albertson, lived with them at this time. Charity was no doubt a hard working woman with heavy loads to carry, starting in childhood with caring for her grandparents and then her siblings after her mothers's early death. In addition to her own five children, she helped to raise two stepchildren. Charity was probably Jacob's favorite child. He spent a great deal of time with Charity and her family in Indiana, prospecting for gold in Morgan County.

It is interesting to note here that Charity's children, Jacob, Joel, Nancy, John, and James all were given names which had been in use by the Riggan family for over 125 years.

Family records indicate that Charity died on July 20, 1864. Her grave is likely in Morgan or Hendricks County, Indiana. However, a search of cemetery records has not revealed the location. General feeling among senior family members indicates that Charity is probably buried in the cemetery at Abner's Creek. Jesse remarried (Phebe Pierce) and lived the last years of his life in Center Township, Hendricks County.
